Large newspapers covering Maryland slashed budgets for local and state news coverage. Few reporters were left to hold elected officials and institutions accountable. Maryland Matters was conceived as a way to fill that gap in coverage with a nonprofit, nonpartisan and independent digital news site. While the entity Maryland Matters was held open for the rest of 2022, its only activities after the sale were one deposit into its bank account and a year-end withdrawal, closing the account. The remaining funds were transferred to the States Newsroom.”
