| In the Fall of 2019, a few months prior to the global COVID-19 lockdown, AWOKE opened the UNITE Cultural Center aka UNITE, a transformative space for youth and community empowerment. UNITE is AWOKE's primary programming site and serves as a cultural hub bridging youth across social divides by providing them entry points through which they develop their connection to creativity, expression, and personal efficacy. Youth programs, community events, and special initiatives provide a plethora of opportunities at UNITE for youth and community members to heal, build, and organize together. By engaging participants via in-person and digital activities throughout the year, UNITE serves as a catalyst for community success uplifting the San Fernando Valley as a cultural, entertainment and educational center for people of all backgrounds and abilities. In response to the first global COVID-19 lockdown, AWOKE was forced to shut down all in-person operations at UNITE. However, while UNITE may have had to close to the public at large, AWOKE used the opportunity to innovate and continued program efforts virtually. UNITE served as the production space for The GR818ERS in hosting the world's first virtual street dance competition, Flava of the Month: Online Battles; the virtual event engaged 10 California counties and 129 cities worldwide reaching approximately 500,000 people within a week of the livestream broadcast. The inaugural virtual event was followed by two more online street dance events and a virtual community arts festival that spanned five days. Additionally, AWOKE worked with local artists and art collectives to install three new murals at UNITE. The aim of these murals is to elevate the need for unity and love amongst people to recover from the global catastrophe. UNITE also served as a production space for local artists to curate virtual content, and was used as a staging area for the production of one of the first Hollywood films filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic in Los Angeles. The social limitations of the pandemic led to program innovation and a way for UNITE to increase its reach and impact through online activation. Virtual program efforts were integrated and UNITE served as driver of curating various accessible entry points to services for youth regardless of physical location and ability levels. From youth arts programs to cultural arts experiences, virtual activities reduced barriers to participation and will in the future supplement in-person engagements. By intentionally fostering inclusive spaces, UNITE leveraged its creative platform to connect local and international communities to build racial solidarity, promote cultural exchange, and nurture global citizenship. AWOKE's global influence as a leader in creative community development and Hip Hop education spans across Latin America, Canada, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa. | $30,069 | $30,069 |
| The GR818ERS x UNITE is a creative place-keeping program that cultivates physical and virtual hubs for youth and families to grow as cultural leaders and skilled practitioners throughout the San Fernando Valley, in particular the Northeast and West San Fernando Valley. As a multidimensional program, The GR818ERS x UNITE provides artistic and athletic workshops, produces creative community events, and connects community members through cultural expression. In response to the emerging needs of priority communities during the COVID-19 pandemic, program activities were transitioned to online and social media platforms. Program activities adhered to County COVID-19 guidelines by incorporating virtual platforms such as video conferencing, social media and livestream broadcasting to enhance accessibility and operate high-risk activities safely. During a virtual event at the height of the first COVID-19 lockdown, a youth stated, "Dance is the thing that is keeping me sane for real. I lost my grandmother, uncle, and close friend to COVID-19. This event was necessary for me and for street dance culture as a whole." Throughout the 2020 program year, The GR818ERS x UNITE curated virtual social and educational environments that welcomed active participation via remote learning, interactive content, and livestream broadcasts. Teaching artists and athletes curated bi-weekly online workshops, monthly virtual events and daily social media content for youth and the community at large, ranging from fitness, breakdancing, wrestling fundamentals, and arts and crafts. In addition to offering live workshops, program content was uploaded to social media accounts for ease of access and shared with community partners to reach priority communities. The GR818ERS x UNITE's weekly creative sessions, known as UNITE Sessions, were also transitioned online. Rather than meeting in-person at the UNITE Cultural Center, participants joined a livestream on social media to engage in a virtual cypher. Approximately 100 youth ages 5-18+ were engaged in regular program activities, while virtual event broadcasts yielded 15,000+ viewers globally. During 2020, over 500 artists were engaged in program efforts as participants and practitioners, with 34 of those artists receiving stipends. Due to The GR818ERS x UNITE's virtual presence, AWOKE's primary social media platforms had gained 5,000 new followers by the end of the year. | $23,614 | $23,614 |
| As a youth-led organization, AWOKE's leadership is steered by The GR818ERS, a youth collective that exercises authority over program design. To center youth voices and leadership in program efforts, The GR818ERS release a bi-annual call for interns interested in using cultural arts and athletics as vehicles for community development. Together in their leadership role with AWOKE, The GR818ERS interns help set organizational policy, facilitate program activities, build community partnerships and develop advocacy priorities. They are grouped into three teams: Media & Marketing, Planning, and Fundraising. By developing such skills as social media management, grant writing, event planning, and video production, youth are empowered to lead the charge of AWOKE's mission and guide the work. This intersectional approach focuses on developing healthier behavioral attitudes, reinforcing supportive peer networks, and creating pathways to education and employment. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The GR818ERS internship program was transitioned online, and intern mentors utilized communications applications like Zoom and Slack to remain productive while working remotely. The GR818ERS team of 15 interns were focused on meeting immediate program needs that emerged due to the COVID-19 pandemic which included innovating programs for virtual transition, producing virtual program content, and assisting with fundraising efforts. Online tools, including Open Broadcast Software and Adobe Creative Suite, proved helpful as interns spearheaded virtual program efforts. AWOKE's leadership and team of interns chaired the West Valley subcommittee of the San Fernando Valley Complete Count Committee which sought to promote Census 2020. In addition to three pop-up outreach events, the interns organized a Census Car Caravan of over 30 vehicles to focus efforts in Canoga Park's hard-to-count communities. At the height of the social uprising, interns convened community members to dialogue and organize around public safety reform, including serving as a foundational member of CAT 911 SFV which seeks to establish and promote community alternatives to law enforcement. Through The GR818ERS interns continued involvement in the Invest in Youth Coalition, two representatives were appointed to the City of Los Angeles' Executive Task Force on Youth Development to develop a roadmap for the establishment of the City's inaugural Youth Development Department. Further, interns supported the relief and recovery of local nonprofit organizations though their leadership in the Campaign for Nonprofit Resilience and ongoing participation in service provider collaboratives like Alliance United and LA Hub. AWOKE's investment in building the capacity of The GR818ERS Internship Program by leveraging technology helped pave a path forward as the organization underwent a paradigm shift in response to the social conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. | $5,500 | $5,500 |
