Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The New Utility Inc. provides cultural dance performances and workshops to engage and inspire the public with hybrid, conceptual movement that challenges perceived limitations and uncovers possibility in the body. The New Utility brings together its choreographer Abby Zbikowski and a diverse set of performers from a vast range of training backgrounds to challenge the orthodoxy of traditional concert dance aesthetics, which are historically sexist, classist, and racist. From this diversity, the New Utility has created a new movement lexicon which triangulates dancing/moving bodies across multiple cultural value systems simultaneously, thus welcoming equally audience members from a range of cultural backgrounds and understandings of dance and movement. By performing, teaching workshops, and engaging in public discussions in a range of venues across multiple communities, the New Utility seeks to enrich the cultural experience of the public through the medium of live dance performance.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Creation of Dance Work. The New Utility engaged in 428 hours of creative practice in the studio in 2019 for their new evening-length work "Radioactive Practice," set to premiere in March 2020 at New York Live Arts in New York, New York. This included a week residency at New York Live Arts in August and another week residency at Princeton University in October. Abby Zbikowski and a diverse set of performers from a range of personal and movement backgrounds create layered, nuanced works of live dance performance that grapple with multiple cultural and aesthetic value systems. Utilizing fatigue, struggle, strength of will, and reliance on each other for support, the performers persevere in the brutal and beautiful parameters of the work, as a means of representing the complex dynamics of the world in which we live. By utilizing and combining different dance forms, the New Utility showcases how diversity and inclusivity can create beautiful hybrid movements that are greater than any one individual style or type of work.$48,228$43,545
Performance of Dance Work. The New Utility was responsible for 10 performance events of Abby Zbikowski's work in 2019, reaching a total live audience of approximately 1,550 people. There were two informal presentations of a selection of the in-progress work "Radioactive Practice" for the Association of Performing Arts Professionals at New York Live Arts in New York City in January. This was followed by a fully-produced 15 minute selection of "Radioactive Practice" at the Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck, NY in April. A 25 minute in-progress showing of Radioactive Practice was held at New York Live Arts in May, marking the completion of the first year of a two-year Artist-in-Residence program at New York Live Arts to support their commission of a full evening-length work to be premiered in Spring 2020. Abby Z and the New Utility was invited to the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in June in Becket, MA. They performed 6 shows of "abandoned playground," one of which was recorded and added to their archive, available to the public who visit the historic dance landmark.$33,808$42,084
Teaching Workshops. Through the New Utility, Abby Zbikowski and her dancer assistants taught movement workshops in connection with the live performance events as well as to the dance community in New York and those visiting New York. Fiona Lundie and Jennifer Meckley, both original dancers of the company and current rehearsal directors, taught about 50 students over 4 days at the American Dance Festival Winter Intensive in New York in January. Zbikowski taught workshop classes over 5 days in June at the STREB Lab for Action Mechanics in Brooklyn, NY, engaging about 50 dance community pre-professionals and professionals. The New Utility offers these workshops for low and no cost to widen accessibility to their dance and movement style, not restricting them to only those with the ability to pay. At the end of June, Zbikowski taught a movement class in conjunction with the performances at Jacob's Pillow to Pillow students as well as community members. This all-levels class allows the public to experience the movement concepts firsthand to deepen their understanding of contemporary dance in general and this style specifically, giving context to the live performances accompanying these workshops. Participants in the workshops have the chance to experience the process Zbikowski and dancers use to transform and recombine movement from various established traditions to reflect the unique identity of the community created in that workshop.$0$255
Public Discussions. The New Utility is an active and rigorous contributor to conversations in the dance and arts fields regarding ethical cultural practices, inclusivity, diversity, and aesthetic experimentation. The full company participated in the post-show discussion at the Emelin Theater in April, taking questions from the audience in a small town in upstate New York, broadening their understanding of the dance field and the lives of those in it. Abby Zbikowski participated in a discussion after the in-progress showing of her new work "Radioactive Practice" in May moderated by the work's dramaturge Momar Ndiaye, a Senegalese choreographer and dancer with an MFA from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The discussion included question-and-answer with the audience, which included renown contemporary choreographers and dance writers, as well as members of the general public. Zbikowski also engaged in a post-show moderated discussion with dance writer Maura Keefe at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Keefe has led audience programs at various venues around the country and is the Associate Director of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, where she was named the Dorothy G. Madden Professor of Dance in 2018. The New Utility engages in public discussions to support live and performance arts in education and as a vital part of the human experience in this world.$0$0

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Due to complications from the coronavirus pandemic, the IRS announced an automatic extension of the May deadline, which was listed as October 15th. A further issue with duplicated items in the accounting software used to maintain the books for this company caused an additional delay of one month. I kindly request leniency on the missed deadline due to the extremely difficult and uncertain conditions that the coronavirus pandemic has caused in this country and in the field of nonprofit live performance in particular.
