Mission
See Schedule OTo improve the legal, social and economic conditions experienced by Maine's immigrants enhancing their lives while strengthening Maine through advocacy, information sharing and collaboration both through and among our member organizations. What began as a vibrant but small coalition is now an independent, immigrant-led non-profit organization. MIRC was never intended to be a service provider; instead, its focus is on important policy priorities, organizing, advocacy, and information sharing.

“Advocacy, information sharing & collaboration: commemorating our 25th anniversary, the coalition has successfully cultivated maine as a welcoming environment where immigrants can flourish, serving as the collective voice for immigrant populations statewide. We comprise 100 members and partners from across the state, collaboratively working to advance this mission. Our overall mission: informing, advocating, and collaborating. Mirc continues to recognize the diverse needs within our community and solutions that address the unique challenges faced by maine's immigrant communities of all backgrounds. Mirc has expanded its immigrant rights advocacy to include essential social services (housing, shelter, food, transportation, etc.), delivered directly and through member organizations. This support primarily benefits the state and key maine towns such as portland, south portland, freeport, yarmouth, lewiston/auburn, brunswick, and sanford. Mirc successfully advocated for the creation of the office of new americans (ona) within the governor's office of policy innovation and the future (gopif). Mirc hosted a town hall, "centering and restoring the community: elections 2024," to encourage informed voting, discuss policies impacting maine's immigrant communities, and highlight broader civil rights implications of immigration policies on september 16, 2024, at portland public.”

WHILE THIS REFLECTS THE CHALLENGING POLITICAL CLIMATE, IT ALSO INDICATES AREAS WHERE INCREASED ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC SUPPORT ARE NECESSARY. DIVISION: MANY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS AND ANTI-DISCRIMINATION BILLS FACED DIVIDED VOTES, UNDERSCORING THE POLARIZED NATURE OF THESE ISSUES IN THE LEGISLATURE. DESPITE THIS, KEY WINS, SUCH AS THE ENACTMENT OF ONA, REFLECT PROGRESS FOR IMMIGRANT RIGHTS. |
