IRS990/Desc0The Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition (MIRC) is a unique collaboration of leaders, a majority of whom are people of color, representing 83-member organizations that include immigrant constituency groups, advocacy groups, direct service and grassroots community organizations.Our mission is to improve the legal, social and economic conditions experienced by Maine's immigrants enhancing their lives while strengthening Maine through advocacy, information sharing and collaboration both through and among our member organizations. COVID19 and Vaccine Distribution/Access Community Response Work/Advocacy, Information Sharing/Collaboration/Institute Organizing Since March 2020, our communities have organized, advocated, and developed community-based responses to COVID-19 for communities of color. Our collective has played a vital role in relief efforts and actively prioritized the voices and perspectives of communities of color across the state because they have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. MIRC coordinated a press conference that included members of tribal communities, Indigenous African American communities, and immigrant communities, and highlighted the need to address systemic racism in Maine, as well as disparities along racial and ethnic lines in relation to COVID-19. MIRC is gathering resources from local, state, and federal officials, as well as recommendations from the CDC and saved them on an easily accessible Google Drive (translated to various languages) to share with coalition members. MIRC has been a driving force in mobilizing state funds to support the work of ethnic-based community organizations (ECBOs) who have been providing various social supports to those affected by COVID-19. Using the funding provided by the Health Equity Improvement Initiative, MIRC continues to be a fiscal sponsor for many of these ECBOs, a majority of whom are coalition members, ensuring that they are reimbursed for their tireless work in the community since June. Through this effort, MIRC aims to both financially support small community organizations, and also to empower them by building their organizational structure and financial reporting capacity for future grant funding.

IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition (MIRC) is comprised of 83 member organizations that share a commitment to advancing and defending the rights of immigrants. Throughout the year our goals and work kept changing as the cases of the coronavirus were detected in our state in March. While Black Mainers make up only 1.6% of the state's population, they accounted for almost 25% of Maine's positive cases. Since then, Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition (MIRC) played a key role in COVID-19 relief efforts within the immigrant community and used the funds for translating COVID19 related and Vaccine flyers and information into the following 17 primary and secondary community languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Lingala, Arabic, Somali, Vietnamese, Russian, Hindi, Farsi, Telugu, Dari, Khmer, Serbo-Croatian, Azerbaijani, Pashto, and Japanese. MIRC worked together in supporting the following bills that passed: *Bill passed and signed into law Legal & Racial Equity: LD 132, LD 2, LD 1034, LD 1167, LD 320, LD 1664, LD 963 Work Development: LD 1684, LD 149, LD 1329 Benefits: HealthCare; Housing & General Assistance: LD 1533, LD 50, LD 1508, LD 78, LD 1327, LD 953 *Bills Carried Over 130th Legal & Racial Equity: LD 344, LD 598, Benefits: HealthCare; Housing & General Assistance: LD 718, LD 473, LD 211, LD 372, LD 175, LD 296, LD 1076, LD 1094 MIRC shot a 1-minute 33 seconds video entitled Maine Immigrant Census 2020 Video: #We Count (https://youtu.be/ARy6IDRF_sk) and created 14 video clips of between 30 seconds to under 2 minutes in 14 ethnic languages. Rally/Speeches/Class Lectures: Given our leadership in the immigrant community, MIRC spoke Saturday, March 27 at 3 pm at City Hall at a Stop Asian Hate Rally for Multiracial Solidarity aimed at raising awareness about the attack of an Asian woman and her daughter in Portland, Maine, and the killings of 6 Asian women in Georgia beyond, and condemning the history of racism and white supremacy that has tried to divide our communities in America. The Executive Director (Mufalo Chitam) gave a class lecture at Massaucsett Information Technology in Cambridge, MA on September 17, 2020, to students studying how regenerative shellfish and seaweed aquaculture industries in Maine could be made more inclusive and accessible for immigrant entrepreneurs. She spoke about the work and vision of MIRC, especially on workforce development and training experiences of immigrants in Maine.
