Mission and Program Overview

Mission

We provide various forms of expressive therapies to children in foster care and those adopted from the Bexar County foster care system. Expressive forms of therapy include: art, music, play, meditation, animal assisted therapy and EMDR therapy. This wide range of expressive forms of therapy is focused on providing therapy that is tailored to each child's age and developmental stage in life in order for them to self-express in a form that is safe and inviting. A trauma-centered therapist provides monthly parent support groups to foster, adoptive, and kinship families whom are in need of practical parenting solutions. This will empowered not only the child, but the entire family with the essential therapeutic tools to better handle daily situations with their children, as well as to gain a better understanding on how trauma affects the brain.

Artvango Therapeutic Services, Inc., is a 501(c) 3 committed to uplifting and healing children affected by the cycle of abuse, poverty and trauma. Artvango Therapeutic Services, Inc., is founded on the principles of helping children and their families heal through the use of expressive arts in the therapeutic environment to strengthen personal awareness, nurture, healing, and positive change.

Expressive forms of therapy include: art, music, play, meditation, animal assisted therapy and EMDR therapy. This wide range of expressive forms of therapy is focused on providing therapy that is tailored to each child's age and developmental stage in life in order for them to self-express in a form that is safe and inviting. A trauma-centered therapist provides monthly parent support groups to foster, adoptive, and kinship families whom are in need of practical parenting solutions. This will empowered not only the child, but the entire family with the essential therapeutic tools to better handle daily situations with their children, as well as to gain a better understanding on how trauma affects the brain.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Parenting Classes for foster and adoptive parents: The key goal is provide practical help for parents, by teaching them strategies and tools that promote attachment relationships. Without an attachment, there is little hope for healing these children and setting them back on the right developmental trajectory. But with a solid attachment, these children can feel safe enough to hand over control for having their needs met back to the parents so they can relax, find joy, and just be kids again. With felt safety, they can pick up again on the normal tasks of childhood, which are to belong, have fun, and learn. These children don't come with a users manual, but this series of classes will help parents to understand to understand the whys behind the behavior. We call this, translating the behavior through a trauma lens. The tools and strategies we teach can be counterintuitive, but once parents get the hang of it, they can be fun and they work! Parents find out that their children aren't inherently bad, but frightened, and they mask fear with anger. Another goal is for parents to understand that their children's behavior is not volitional, but comes from fight, flight, and freeze responses of complex PTSD. This is why these children are so reactive. When parents understand this, they can stop taking the behaviors personally. We will learn basic concepts of brain development. If we compare the brain to the engine of a car, if the car's engine light comes on, we look under the hood, we don't get angry and yell at it. All of our motives, worldviews and behaviors come from the workings of our brains. We don't have bad kids, we have kids with mechanical problems in their brains, and brain templates can be altered by positive repetitive experiences. A goal is for parents to meet with and support other families in their situation. This is extremely frustrating and lonely work. Parents raising typical children have no idea what it is like. Friends and family don't understand and offer useless or unwanted advice, even criticism. To find other parents who have been in the same trenches is a huge relief. One of the best supports is the social support, friendship, and a place to relax and have fun with people who actually "get it." The final goal is to create happy connected families. Parents need to have reasonable expectations that changing a child's brain takes time and commitment, but there is hope! Too often, when parents have done their all and see no improvement, they throw in the towel and relinquish the child back to the state. The goal is to encourage parents and support them so they notice that incremental improvements are, in fact, successes. Parenting severely damaged children is the hardest job they will ever do, and it can't be done without support and encouragement. Parents don't know that there are techniques that work. Classes taught through foster and adoption agencies aren't long enough, comprehensive enough, or offer the specificity of practical techniques needed. Also, most parents find that the best help comes after the child is placed when they're actually in the middle of severe challenges and don't know where to find help. These classes fill that function. Each class will consist of 8 weekly sessions, 2 hrs. each. The first hour will be devoted to concepts and techniques, and the last hour will be taken up with application of strategies and tools, problem solving, and parent support and socializing. The course will be repeated 3 times a year. The participants are to be birth parents and other family caregivers, foster parents, and adoptive parents.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Art Care Packages provided to children in foster care system in and around Bexar County Texas: In Bexar County there are more than 8,000 confirmed children who have been victims of abuse and neglect. 233 children in Bexar county are housed in shelters every day and many children entering the foster care system have experienced trauma. This trauma impacts the physical development of the brain, impacting their social, emotional, and mentally stability. The majority of these children are not able to verbally express their traumatic experiences and if left untreated, the children are often deemed defiant, ADHD, rebellious, suicidal, anxious, or problematic individuals. The foster and adoptive families are caring but inexpert in understanding and dealing with the aftereffects of trauma on children. Too often, the frustration and pain of parenting a traumatized child leads to that child being returned to government care. Untreated childhood trauma leads to unhealthy life choices such as involvement in gangs, drugs, alcoholism, even incarceration. If we fail to assist them as young children, 76% of children become sex traffic victims, 40% become homeless, 40% incarcerated and less than 50% of foster youth that age out of the system graduate from high school. There are very few San Antonio therapists that accept Medicaid as a form of insurance, leaving this vulnerable population with little to no mental health services available to them to heal from the trauma they have experienced. These children end up paying the ultimate price for their caregivers abuse and neglect. Artvango serves children in the foster care system who have experienced some sort of trauma, ranging in age from 4 to 17 years old. The population is composed of both female and males, and the ethnic breakdown is: 75% are Hispanic, 15% African American, 10% Caucasian. Children served are primarily from Bexar County, but 15% are from Comal and Kendall counties. Since March 2020, Artvango has been serving more children who are entering the foster care system as they are being removed from their biological families for abuse and neglect during this pandemic. Children entering the foster care system mostly come from low-income families, some in severe health conditions. All of the children in foster care have experienced some sort of abuse and neglect whether it be physically, mentally or emotionally. Artvango not only serves the children, but also work with the caregivers in order to provide the best support system and provide them with trauma informed parenting classes that offers effective ways to parent children who come from hard places. These additional services offers the child and caregivers a high success rate of moving past the challenges they face on a day to day basis. The funds will be and have been utilized to buy boxes and basic art supplies such as: glue, markers, crayons, oil sticks, sketch books, construction paper, play doh, glitter glue, finger paints, canvas, feathers, beads, goggly eyes, yarn, stickers and balloons. Most of Artvango's young clients are in the foster care system and living with extended family members who do not have the financial means for art supplies for our client's virtual therapy sessions.
