Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Part I, Line 10

Our programming is designed to support Black girls using a workshop format that promotes development across literacies as they explore policies and participate in civic engagement activities. For their participation,p each girl receives a stipend of $598 dollars for their participation for the school year. Our programming runs from September through June for the school year and then July through August for summer programming. During the 2022 school year, we provided programming for 39 girls in grades 7-12. Our weekly programming and quarterly conferences provided mentorship and civics education to girls who live and attend school in Philadelphia. Programming was provided outside of school hours in our two signature programs we SPEAK and My World.

Part I, Line 16

Our line 16 expenses include the total cost for our community-based and school partnership programs that are offered free to the community. Programs focus on mental health, well-being, and personal empowerment, including academic support for literacy development.

Part I, Line 20

Due to limited in-person activities, we carried over a significant balance from 2022. We have moved to in-person programming whenever possible which significantly increased our cost in 2022.

Part I, Line 8

More than 85% of our funding has come from grants and gifts.

Part II, Line 26

This total includes credit balance owed and committed payroll and payroll taxes for the year ending 12/31/2022.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Our programming is designed to support Black girls using a workshop format that promotes development across literacies as they explore policies and participate in civic engagement activities.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Our line 16 expenses include the total cost for our community-based and school partnership programs that are offered free to the community. Programs focus on mental health, well-being, and personal empowerment, including academic support for literacy development.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Due to limited in-person activities, we carried over a significant balance from 2022. We have moved to in-person programming whenever possible which significantly increased our cost in 2022.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3More than 85% of our funding has come from grants and gifts.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4This total includes credit balance owed and committed payroll and payroll taxes for the year ending 12/31/2022.

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0We are a very small organization, and the time frame needed to compile and conduct an end-of-the-year review with limited time from the board creates a burden.
