Mission and Program Overview

Mission

EPIC Players, founded on August 25, 2016, is a 501c3 nonprofit, neuro-diverse theatre company dedicated to creating professional performing arts opportunities and supportive social communities through the arts for persons living with developmental disabilities. Through our inclusive mainstage productions, musical cabarets, original showcases, skills-based classes and career resources, we hope to increase critical employment opportunities for our community and break down long held stereotypes surrounding neuro-diverse communities.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
EPIC Productions: EPIC works tirelessly to create professional quality performing opportunities in the arts for its neuro-diverse actors so they can get hands-on job experience in the field and be prepared to attain jobs outside of EPIC in the arts world. EPIC also employs all of its neuro-diverse artists onstage and behind the scenes and pays them a small stipend for their time and talent. Another goal of this program is to break long held stereotypes that the public may have of persons living with neuro-diveristies and instead illustrate the talent and abilities of people living with disabilities. EPIC produces 2 challenging, neuro-inclusive, and paid performances per year, reaching audiences of over 400 people with each production. Our 2018 productions included "The Little Prince" and "The Tempest" as well as an originally devised piece entitled, "EPIC Plays: The Inclusion Project". All of our mainstage productions are selected for their capacity to be elevated by a neuro-diverse cast. We chose productions such as The Little Prince specifically because they provide our members a chance to get paid to play classic characters, usually denied to them. Many times, people living with developmental disabilities are only considered for peripheral "disabled person" roles, and as mentioned previously, even these roles are largely inaccessible or exclusive. Each of EPIC's productions functions on an adaptive rehearsal schedule to accommodate our actors living with cognitive impairments, meaning we typically rehearse each show once or twice a week for a period of four to six months, rather than every day for four to six weeks. during our productions, artists living with disabilities and neuro-typical artists work together on and off the stage to create each performance; collaboratively learning from each other and creating a culture of equity. Each production provides our players with the opportunity to apply their skills in real-time, showcase their talent, and learn from professional colleagues in the arts. Our players serve as actors, assistant directors, stage managers, technicians, and front of house staff for our shows and each is compensated for their time and talent. Because of these practices, our productions are learning opportunities for the audience as well, with one theater reviewer observing that, ". . . in the context of EPIC's greater mission, this line of inquiry suggests, too, that the ways we view difference-especially in the alter-abled-is something that's purely and unnaturally taught and learned when we're very young." Our performances break-down these preconceived notions of what it means to be "different" and highlights the real abilities of people living with disabilities. In 2018, we held 75, 3-hour rehearsals for our two main stage productions and employed 35 neuro-diverse artists onstage and backstage along with 10 neuro-typical artists. Each show had an audience of 489 and sold out every performance. The productions each performed 8 shows. The family and friends of our EPIC community make up 60% of our on-average 400-person per-production audiences. Our audiences are also neuro-inclusive, with roughly 50% of our turnout consisting of members' family and friends who are also living with neuro-diversities. We hope to expand our total audience by 25% this fiscal year with targeted PR strategies promoting our inclusive work. EPIC was able to refine our key priorities to share with our audiences and create feedback surveys to test audience response to our neuro-diverse performances. Our feedback was overwhelmingly positive and reflected success in raising awareness of neuro-diverse communities and the challenges they face, with 30% of our attendees indicating that ours was the first neuro-diverse production they had witnessed; and that they were likely to return or similar performances. Through the access given by EPIC, company members have recently auditioned for, and won roles in, Off-Broadway productions, television shows, and commercials; some members have even been featured in films shown across the nation and earned their actors union membership. Additional recent accomplishments include: speaking on the vitality and power of autism in the arts at The United Nations in honor of World Autism Day, performing at HBO headquarters, receiving a New York Innovative Theater Award nomination for the 2017 neuro-diverse production of Dog Sees God, and ringing the opening bell at The New York Stock Exchange in celebration of Autism Awareness Month.$25,000$30,793
One of EPIC's primary services are free classes and career development workshops for all company members living with developmental disabilities. In 2018, we offered 85 free classes in: devised theater, improvisation, musical theater, film production, puppeteering, music foundations and playwriting. We served 15 individuals in each class, and 63 community members over all. We also employed 20 teaching artists and class mentors to support students. EPIC Class series, entitled "EPIC Plays", is intended to provide skills in the performing arts to persons living with developmental disabilities, free of charge, in order to prepare them for future careers in the arts. Each class utilizes one lead teachers, one supervisor and two to four EPIC mentors, or supportive coaches, to teach the class. EPIC's innovation stems from our neuro-inclusive teaching techniques and work culture. True to our mission, EPIC creates an environment where artists living with and without developmental disabilities can work and learn together in the same class or production. In our performing arts classes, EPIC's teaching method is adapted to ensure all lessons are accessible to the learner, regardless of ability. Each class has a lead teacher, an assistant teacher, and two EPIC "mentors" who function as adaptive coaches and one-on-one instructors for individuals who may require extra support. Students are always paired together neuro-diversely, to break down stereotypes and to promote a supportive community for all learners. EPIC has also launched in school programming to teach social skills through the arts to students 10 to 18 who are living with developmental disabilities. EPIC works with three school partners and has hosted 25 classes in 2018 with 10 students in each class and two lead teaching artists leading each class. According to EPIC class surveys, 95% of EPIC students enjoyed all classes and felt that they learned a new skill that will help them pursue their hobby and careers in the performing arts. Through the access given by EPIC, company members have recently auditioned for, and won roles in, Off-Broadway productions, television shows, and commercials; some members have even been featured in films shown across the nation.
