Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of Fighting Chance Rescue is to rescue provide treatment and care and to prevent the neglect and abuse of horses through education investigation and rescue operationsWe offer sanctuary for slaughter-bound abused and neglected horsesWe advocate for their welfare and enhance the human-animal bond We are one of the only equine rescues serving South Eastern Ohio

Equine Rescue To raise funds to support horses in need FCR accepts unwanted horses or those in need to rescue from individuals, humane societies and law enforcement. The rescue transports these horses and provides for their nutritional, medical, farrier and rehabilitation needs. We often rely on foster homes to complete the rehabilitation process. Rescue horses are re-homed after rehabilitation based on our screening process to ensure that horse and home are a good match. This program is supported from the rescue's general operating funds. We handle life saving measures and end of life care. We specialize in critical care horses and have the ability to have a horse hospital nursing care facility in our barn.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Providing safe adequate housing for retired sanctuary horses, owner surrenders and donated horses. We made facility upgrades in 2020.Fighting Chance added a sand arena this year for purposes of exercising the rescue horses. We added safe fencing panels throughout the property in the rescue pasture areas to help maintain the fencing. We also built an addition on to the barn that was 36 x 48 that houses, horses, feed, supplies and provided additional space to keep the original 3 stalls in the main barn available with on the spot cameras and a new hoist to sling so that animals that are in conditions for which they cannot support their body weight have support .This sling provides assistance for the to maintain the upright position this allows their organs to continue functioning but can maintain the full weight of the horse. We have used this many times in the past few years but needed to upgrade where it was placed in the barn, to make it stronger and upgrade to a machinal hoist versus the hand winch system we had. The auto hoist decreases pressure on the organs as the horse is lifted . Due to the many weeks we spent with 24 hour around the clock care we added a lounge to the barn. The lounge allows our volunteers to have a safe , heated/ cooled dry space to oversee the critical care animal in the sling. We also added a porta potty on site. These costs were out of the ordinary due to a large donation made specifically for facility upgrades.$0$43,585
Fighting Chance rescue raises funds mostly from facebook to fund the surrender horses upkeep , medical costs and maintain the facilities for which the horses live. This is through personal board members fundraiser on their profile, community members and the organization itself running fundraisers to save specific horses. The bulk of our horses are owner surrenders that belong to people that can no longer care for the animals. These animals are them adopted out. FCR has a waived adoption on most owner surrender horses but from time to time we do charge an adoption fee. Sanctuary horses FCR has 3 permanently retired horses. These horses are 36, 38 and 40 years old. They came to us in different stages of the operation but all at a body score one fighting for their lives. We spent thousands of dollars in initial care to bring them back to life. They are all living happy easy lives and we raise funds to be able to afford their upkeep of medical, feed, hay , supplements, farrier work and maintain their pasture and stalls. Auction Horse Saves We have a relationship set up with several auction owners to call us to purchase sick horses before having them run through a sale. Most of these horses are a body score 1 which is the closest to death condition .We purchase them and nurse them back to health . We go to auctions several times of year to purchase horses in horrible condition. We bring them back to help and adopt them out to loving homes. These cost are feed, hay , vet bills, farrier, supplies, purchase of horses and general care items.$0$15,568
