Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of austin bat refuge is to promote respect for bats and their place in the environment through education, conflict resolution, rehabilitation and release.

Goals and Purposes The goals of Austin Bat Refuge are to provide individual bats the resources and care they require to recover from injury and be released back to the wild. Equally important is educating the public so that over time, the fears and misinformation that often guide people to harm bats, will be replaced with knowledge, appreciation and respect. Our ultimate goal is for people to be willing to peacefully coexist with bats. Mission The mission of Austin Bat Refuge is to promote respect for bats and their place in the environment through rehabilitation and release, education, and conflict resolution,. Vision Austin Bat Refuge envisions a future in which bats and humans can live in harmony, and where bats that have adapted to urban areas, as their habitat is increasingly lost, are welcomed rather than reviled.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
BAT REHABILITATION We provided direct, loving care for over 350 bats. Injured, orphaned or displaced due to a variety of circumstances, all were given the opportunity to heal, recover and return to the wild in most cases. Bats that could not support themselves in the wild have a home with Austin Bat Refuge for the remainder of their lives. Each rescue is an educational opportunity for the people who find bats in trouble, and for their families, and is leveraged through our social media. We continued our quest to divert bats that have had no contact with people or pets, from certain euthanasia by some county animal control agencies. With donations from the public and a couple of small grants, we created a bat intake area that allows for separation and quarantine of bat species that are vulnerable to White-nose Syndrome.$0$33,713
EDUCATION Our education table on Friday and Saturday nights at Congress Avenue Bridge was again a fixture from April through Halloween. We were available for information about our storied Mexican/Brazilian free-tailed bats that make this bridge their home, and occasionally delighted visitors to our table with a close-up view of a little bat, before releasing him or her at the end of the evening, when most of the crowd has gone home. We presented 44 programs about bats in 2019, for audiences as diverse as elementary school classrooms, both in person and via distance learning; Master Naturalist chapters in Central Texas, and riverboat tours for convention groups meeting in Austin, wanting a little local weird! We were asked by several local media outlets including Austin's public television station, KLRU, and public radio station, KUT, to contribute to stories about bats from interest in bat flights at Congress Avenue Bridge, to stories examining mythology and the origins of$0$13,847
CONFLICT RESOLUTION We consulted on issues involving bats in buildings via email, phone and in person for more than 75 individuals in homes and businesses. On a large project, we hired and arranged flights for a neutral third-party consultant at our own expense and arranged for him to meet with stakeholders. We implemented his suggestions in order to safeguard hundreds of thousands of bats. We performed two humane bat exclusions for individuals who did not have the capacity to pay market rate for a professional bat exclusion service.$0$1,691
