Secure the village is on a mission to turn people and organizations into cyberguardians with the knowledge, skills and commitment needed to meet the ongoing challenges of cybercrime, cyber privacy, and information security. We do this through education, support, and advocacy for cybersecurity and data privacy. Our work encompasses three inter-connected information security strategic areas of concern 1. Business cybersecurity, 2. Cybersecurity of individuals and families community, and 3. The cybersecurity workforce. With our la cybersecure initiative, we are on a journey to make los angeles the cyber safest community in america. Secure the village is a member of nonprofit cyber, an international coalition of cybersecutiry nonprofits who collaborate and work together on project. A key component of our strategy is utilizing the expertise and commitment of nonprofit cyber members, as we as other national cybersecurity leaders.

Business program 2023 was a year of significant growth in our business programs. We applied for and won a grant of 125,000 from the center for internet security alan paller laureate program. The objective of the grant is to design and implement a scalable pilot program designed to help smaller organizations measurably improve their information security. The program we developed - la cybersecure - is a team-based learn-by-doing 5-organization cohort model. We designed la cybersecure to provide education and community in a complementary way to two constituencies 1 smaller businesses and nonprofits 2 it service providers / msps. For smaller businesses and nonprofits, we designed a six-month cybersecurity program where organizations meet monthly in their cohort to i complete sightline security kickstart program and ii implement the cyber readiness program from the cyber readiness institute. The program for an it service provider / msp cohort has two tracks. 1 a 6 month program to improve information security management through the center for internet security controls. 2 a 12-month program to improve business development, the close rate, by applying neuroscience principals to more effectively communicating the why of information security to their clients and prospects. By the end of 2023, we had registered our first two cohorts one a business / nonprofit cohort the other an it service provider / msp cohort. Both cohorts are scheduled to kick-off in early 2024. In june, dr. Stahl presented an overview the la cybersecure design to the national security wee dram. The meeting was attended by approximately 60 people. In october, secure the village presented our 4th annual summit, a reasonable approach to reasonable security, to approximately 40 attendees, including cybersecurity and it professionals, and attorneys. Secure the village produced two threat briefings with the ca department of financial protection and innovation at which the fbi spoke. The first had approximately 100 attendees. The second had over 200. In january, secure the villages dr. Stahl facilitated a panel managing business risk at technologys edge cybersecurity and biometrics hosted by the harvard club of chicago. The event had approximately 60 attendees. Dr. Stahl was an invited speaker to annual meetings of the washington and idaho societies of cpas. The washington meeting had approximately 75 attendees. Idaho had approximately 55.

Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 29

Community engagement program we continued to publish our cybersecurity news of the week weekend vulnerability report. Both are posted to the secure the village website, to our linkedin and twitter accounts. Secure the village has 1,100 followers on linkedin. They are also sent by email to approximately 2,900 people. In may 2023 we launched our new monthly family protection newsletter. We produced five newsletters in 2023. They were posted on linkedin and facebook, and sent via email to subscribers. The community engagement group delivered its first how hackable are you webinar in september. This is a 60-minute webinar available through financial institutions, attorneys, wealth managers, and others wishing to reach the consumer market. We provided two privacy webinars to the community during the year. Each was attended by approximately 40 people. In 2023, dr. Stahl was an invited speaker at a meeting of the national adult protective services association. The meeting had approximately 100 attendees.

Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 30

Workforce programs the la cybersecurity workforce coalition met monthly, 12 times during 2023. The focus of meetings continued to be creating bridges between a students education and their entry into the workforce.

Form 990-EZ, Part V, Line 35

Explanation for not reporting business income with the goal to turn people and organizations into cyberguardians with the knowledge, skills, and committment needed to meet ongoing challenges of cybercrime, cyber privacy, and information security, secure the village held a total of 27 public events. 21 were business programs. Two were workforce programs. Four were community events. Nominal fees were charged for these educational events and such fees further the exempt purpose of the organization.
