“Form 990-ez, part iii program service accomplishments: ecoworks international (ewi) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization founded in 2008 to confront persistent poverty. Our mission is to: bring critical resources, technical expertise and innovative solutions to drive change and empower haitians engaged in fighting poverty. We have been working in haiti since 2009. Ewi is headed by founder and executive director, henryka mans who has been working with developing countries worldwide for the past 30 years; haiti is her 25th country.after consultations with local farming families and leaders on their needs, priorities and choices, ewi designed with them the talia farms development program for the region of the lake azue. Talia farms program comprises several projects, all focused on advancing the core program of meeting the needs and aspirations of the farming families and communities we work with. Part of our objectives is to build a legacy that promotes increased earnings and self-determination. Central to talia farms are two components: 1-the establishment of five talia farms c ooperatives2-the establishment of the food processing centerthese are vital supporting farmers' determination to farm on their small plot of land and, at the same time, increase their capacities and revenues so they can earn a living wage and become self-reliant. Before starting the cooperatives and the food processing center, ewi embarked on an extended farmers' readiness program which includes training farmers in the permaculture method which is best adapted to the climate, soil remediation needs, and realities on the ground. Permaculture enables farmers to cultivate a rich array of vegetables while rebuilding the soil's ecosystem, restoring its richness, and retaining more moisture within the soil, thus needing less water and avoiding the pitfalls of monoculture. Started in 2016, this program will continue through the next five years. This project benefits from a partnership with usaid's farmer-to-farmer program. As of 2018, farmers will also start training in the concepts and principles of agricultural cooperatives; and the benefits and responsibilities of co-op members. Cooperatives are businesses whose members are also owners. This model will require that farmers become more familiar with business management and planning for the future. These cooperatives will end up being owned and managed by farmers for farmers, and will serve well the founding members and generations to come. Women's literacy: ewi offered a one-year course to teach non-literate rural women how to read, write and do basic math. Since it takes one year to reach a fair level of literacy, this project was started may 30th 2015 and the women graduated in may 2016. In addition to all the obvious benefits of being literate, this course also prepares women to take on leadership roles since ewi rules require that all boards must have 50% women and 50% men, and that at last 10% of the members be below thirty years old. Access to irrigation water: in the mountain areas of our region, there is no access to water. There are no aquifers and, since hurricane matthew (october 2016), the nearby rivers are filled with silt and stones so even when it rains, water dissipates instead of filling the riverbeds. Ewi designed grains: a gravity-based, rainwater harvesting system. It is now looking for an engineer to help refine the design and produce technical drawings and specifications so as to make grains construction-ready. Feed-a-child will serve children, pregnant women and newborns in the four communes ('counties') talia farms serves. This one-year pilot program offers treatment, training, and support services. It will collect data to evaluate and plan project's expansion. Ewi received a grant from the organization for economic co-operation and development (oecd's), paris, france, war on hunger group to launch the project.disaster response: in addition to talia farms, the long-term develop”
