Mission

Midtown indy exists to cultivate an equitable, healthy, and sustainable community in which stakeholders of all incomes, races, and ethnicities have access to the opportunities, services, and amenities they need to thrive. Specifically, midtown's work is focused on 1) building a sense of community; 2) support for community based and minority businesses and job skills development; 3) improvement of transportation options and the vitality of key commercial corridors and nodes; 4) improvement of housing options and public spaces.

Midtown Indy is a community service corporation committed to advancing the quality of life and economic vitality of Indianapolis' Midtown neighborhoods.

IRS990/Desc0Midtown Anchor Coalition: In an effort to maintain institutional engagement in the Midtown initiative, Midtown collaborated with key institutional stakeholders to form the Midtown Anchor Coalition. The Midtown Anchor Coalition (MAC) is comprised of six of Indianapolis oldest and most important anchor institutions together with key community partners. MAC members include: Butler University, Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association, Christian Theological Seminary, Citizens Energy Group, Crown Hill Heritage Foundation, Indianapolis Museum of Art, International School of Indiana, and Midtown Indianapolis, Inc. Together, these organizations employ over 2,000 people, own 1,100 acres of land and over three million square feet of facilities, spend over $117 million annually on goods and services, and attract over 1.1 million visitors annually. While they share a common geography northwest of downtown Indianapolis, more importantly this Coalition shares a commitment to enhancing the collective assets of Midtown Indianapolis as a premier destination to live, work, visit, and learn in the Central Indiana Region. Serving as the central convener of the coalition Midtown worked to establish a down payment and home repair assistance program to encourage employees of the institutions to buy and/or repair homes in the neighborhoods surrounding their respective institutions. With support from INHP, the Indy Chamber and each of the institutional partners the program secured $600,000 in funding to support a 2017 launch of the program. Other areas of work included implementation strategies around: Safety and Security; Education; Attraction and Identity; Collaboration and Engagement; Housing and Neighborhood; Connectivity and Infrastructure. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Great Places 2020 Public Engagement and Love Meetings: Building on work from previous years, Midtown continued efforts in 2016 related to stakeholder engagement and predevelopment at several key sites, principally the area around 38th and Illinois Street as part of the City of Indianapolis Great Places 2020 program to revitalize specific neighborhoods in the city. Activities and related expenses included meetings with area property owners, a review of zoning at key sites, an analysis of public and private resources which might aid in future redevelopment efforts. Working with leaders from various neighborhood groups, Midtown evaluated land use, environmental, and available public funding for redevelopment of vacant and blighted properties. These efforts included predevelopment and acquisition strategies for several vacant buildings. In 2016 Midtown acquired a long vacant property at 3802 North Illinois street, and is pursing plans for its rehabilitation in service to needs of the community. Further, Midtown assisted a new business owner at 3902 N Illinois to secure faade grants and business loans to aid in his redevelopment of vacant former grocery store property. http://www.midtownindy.org/GreatPlacesFeedback.php.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Tarkington Park: Continuing efforts from 2015, Midtown worked with the City of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Parks Foundation to help secure funding and program support for a $6 Million redevelopment plan for Tarkington Park. This included raising funds to construct a Performance Shelter and to develop a program, operations, and maintenance plan for the park. Tarkington Park opened to the public in December of 2016 and Midtown with partners continued working to ensure the park is well maintained and supportive of the needs of the surrounding community.
