Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Support for people coming home from prison to reduce chances that they will return to crime and prison. We accomplish this through leadership training, life skills training, mentoring and transition housing. Specifically, we foster one-on-one conversation between ordinary community members (coming into our prison classes as visitors). These conversations are on specific topics in a classroom environment. The conversations are debriefed in the large group. These one-on-one interactions with community members are the bedrock of our work. Prisoners recognize that they can talk to "normal" people when they return to the community. It gives them confidence that they can make it.

PHOENIX Rising Transitons is a grassroots community-based organization that provides transitional support including education, mentoring and community building with special concern for releasing convicts, ex-convicts and their families, crime victims, and the community at large.

Program Service Accomplishments:Covid-19 Assistance and Mentoring-Oregon Health Authority (OHA) approached PHOENIX to assist with those coming home from prison who also needed to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19 protocols. We were assigned to Columbia County, Oregon. It is a less populated county that didnt have many people arriving home from prision, so OHA asked us to serve community folks as well. We responded to 98 requests for assistance, providing housing, utility, and food assistance to 74 households, including 6 households with formerly incarcerated people. In January 2022m OHA added Clackamas County-part of the Portland metro area. We received 13 requests, providing assistance to all 13 households, all of which included formerly incarcerated people. In June 2022, OHA added Multnomah County-home of Portland, Oregon. We received 7 requests for assistance, providing assistance to 6 households, including 2 with formerly incarcerated people. In June, we received requests from 2 households from other counties and provided assistance to them. Both households included formerly incarcerated people. This work included assisting people with other services they needed access to, such as long-term housing assistance, domestic violence shelter, addiction treatment, etc. We trained a new mentor as a Certified Peer Recovery Mentor (CRM) for this work. Mindfulness Meditation-We hosted a weekly mindfulness meditation series for both people who had been to prison and community members. It was led by a volunteer over Zoom on Sunday mornings for two 12-week sessions. Writing Group-This class originally started in the prison. It met two times in the community during the year. Three mentee students and two mentors attended in addition to the writing teacher.Community InReach (In-Prison Mentoring)-This is our prison project. We were not able to go into the prison all year because of COVID-19 restrictions. We had been writing letters of support and news about PHOENIX to those who had been in our class. The last student prisoner was released from prison in September 2021, so letter-writing ended at that time. We did work with our volunteers who had Department of Corrections Volunteer IDs apprised of how to stay current so they could go back into the prison once COVID restrictions were dropped. This meant volunteers had to stay updated with online classes or various topics that the DOC assigned. Six volunteers that usually go into the prison kept up with their volunteer certification.The Impact of Incarceration on Health-We continued our relationship with Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing, making three presentations to their Populations class focused on social determinants of health-in this case, the impact of incarceration on health. These presentations are designed to increase understanding between health care providers and former prisoners with the aim of achieving better health outcomes for them. This is also to maintain our relationship with OHSU School of Nursing so that when we return to the prison, two students will do their practicum with us each term. We also continued to meet with student leaders at the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM)to prepare them for returning to our prison classes after COVID restrictions end. They earn community education credits by offering trainings to our classes on various topics of interest to prisoners, e.g., exercise, stress reduction, nutrition, natural pain reduction and remedies, etc.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Program Service Accomplishments:Covid-19 Assistance and Mentoring-Oregon Health Authority (OHA) approached PHOENIX to assist with those coming home from prison who also needed to quarantine or isolate due to COVID-19 protocols. We were assigned to Columbia County, Oregon. It is a less populated county that didnt have many people arriving home from prision, so OHA asked us to serve community folks as well. We responded to 98 requests for assistance, providing housing, utility, and food assistance to 74 households, including 6 households with formerly incarcerated people. In January 2022m OHA added Clackamas County-part of the Portland metro area. We received 13 requests, providing assistance to all 13 households, all of which included formerly incarcerated people. In June 2022, OHA added Multnomah County-home of Portland, Oregon. We received 7 requests for assistance, providing assistance to 6 households, including 2 with formerly incarcerated people. In June, we received requests from 2 households from other counties and provided assistance to them. Both households included formerly incarcerated people. This work included assisting people with other services they needed access to, such as long-term housing assistance, domestic violence shelter, addiction treatment, etc. We trained a new mentor as a Certified Peer Recovery Mentor (CRM) for this work. Mindfulness Meditation-We hosted a weekly mindfulness meditation series for both people who had been to prison and community members. It was led by a volunteer over Zoom on Sunday mornings for two 12-week sessions. Writing Group-This class originally started in the prison. It met two times in the community during the year. Three mentee students and two mentors attended in addition to the writing teacher.Community InReach (In-Prison Mentoring)-This is our prison project. We were not able to go into the prison all year because of COVID-19 restrictions. We had been writing letters of support and news about PHOENIX to those who had been in our class. The last student prisoner was released from prison in September 2021, so letter-writing ended at that time. We did work with our volunteers who had Department of Corrections Volunteer IDs apprised of how to stay current so they could go back into the prison once COVID restrictions were dropped. This meant volunteers had to stay updated with online classes or various topics that the DOC assigned. Six volunteers that usually go into the prison kept up with their volunteer certification.The Impact of Incarceration on Health-We continued our relationship with Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing, making three presentations to their Populations class focused on social determinants of health-in this case, the impact of incarceration on health. These presentations are designed to increase understanding between health care providers and former prisoners with the aim of achieving better health outcomes for them. This is also to maintain our relationship with OHSU School of Nursing so that when we return to the prison, two students will do their practicum with us each term. We also continued to meet with student leaders at the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM)to prepare them for returning to our prison classes after COVID restrictions end. They earn community education credits by offering trainings to our classes on various topics of interest to prisoners, e.g., exercise, stress reduction, nutrition, natural pain reduction and remedies, etc.
