Support for people coming home from prison to reduce chances that they will return to crime and prison. We accomplish this through leadership training, life skills training, mentoring and transition housing. Specifically, we foster one-on-one conversation between ordinary community members (coming into our prison classes as visitors). These conversations are on specific topics in a classroom environment. The conversations are debriefed in the large group. These one-on-one interactions with community members are the bedrock of our work. Prisoners recognize that they can talk to "normal" people when they return to the community. It gives them confidence that they can make it.

| PHOENIX Transitional Housing - for people coming out of prison. The objective is to acclimate ex-cons to a successful life in the community so they won't return to crime and prison. Residents must participate in PHOENIX mentor project because the link between housing, mentor meetings and life skills development together strengthen the likelihood of success. There were 14 residents over the year. The house has the capacity for six residents at a time. The average stay is 4.5 months. The house has been more stable (longer stays and more rents kept up-to-date) since hiring a part-time house manager. | $0 | $33,785 |
| In-the-Community Mentor Project - We had only one paid Certified Peer Recovery Mentor this year. He was out sick for part of the year. He worked with 28 mentees over the course of the year, averaging 10 hours of individual mentor time with each. Additionally each mentee was exposed to several hours of life skills training in the community. PHOENIX trained two Certified Peer Recovery Mentors. Almost all mentoring and life skills in the community are contracted with Impact NW (in Portland, Oregon). We have two separate contracts with them to do mentoring. | $0 | $16,403 |
| Community InReach (In-prison mentoring) - We taught a weekly leadership class in the prison to 43 prisoners over the course of the year. Because of schedule rearrangements, the prison cut our class time from 3 hours per week to 2 hours. We held our life skills class only occasionally since losing a part-time contracted trainer. (Life skills was resumed on a regular basis in late 2016.) It is also a 2-hour class. There were 924 contact hours with students during the year. Typically, we teach a 12-hour intensive on leadership skills that sets the agenda for the class the rest of the year (however, this year the 2nd training fell outside of the fiscal year - in July 2016). We graduated 8 people from our December 2015 training. These students in turn become class leaders and help teach future trainings. If they remain with PHOENIX in the community, they may be eligible to become mentors. | $0 | $10,508 |
| Nursing Students and Cultural Competency Training - We partner with Oregon Health and Science University to serve as a host site for nursing students studying population health - specifically, the impact of incarceration on health both before and after release. After doing this for several terms, we created a "cultural competency" training for health care providers so that they could become aware of specific health issues, experiences and attitudes that impact prisoners and ex-convicts. Our motive was to increase understanding on behalf of both ex-cons and medical providers to work toward better health outcomes for ex-convicts in the community. We received a grant from the Archdiocese of Portland to pursue this work. We made a presentation at the Oregon Public Health Association annual meeting. We supervised OHSU School of Nursing students - 6 from the populations class and one from a leadership class. They regularly attend our prison classes and in-the-community events. We were able to get our work embedded in their curriculum and have made these presentations to their populations class each term. We made connections to present our work elsewhere (e.g., to medical clinic staffs). PHOENIX staff, nursing students, prisoners and ex-convicts in PHOENIX have made a booklet, a PowerPoint, an in-prison training piece on health care and have jointly made several presentations in various venues. | $5,000 | $4,368 |
