Heal the ocean focuses on wastewater infrastructure - sewers and septic systems for which we hire consultants to access state grant funds to help wwtps upgrade to recycled water production instead of ocean dumping, as well as help whole communities abandon septic systems in inappropriate areas(next to creeks or in: coastal, areas of high groundwater, on top of groundwater basins).

| IRS990/Description | 0 | Heal the Ocean focuses on wastewater infrastructure - sewers and septic systems - as well as ocean dumping practices that have contributed to ocean pollution that closes Santa Barbara beaches. We are focused on Santa Barbara County, but our methods are now serving as a model for other coastal communities across the country.Heal the Ocean hires engineers, experts, researchers and scientists, lawyers, GIS mappers and university laboratories to produce reports and to give us test results as well as sewer engineering blueprints. We perform cost feasibility studies for upgraded wastewater management methods. We have conducted DNA tests in watersheds and well as virus tests in the ocean. We work with city, county and state agencies to initiate new programs of wastewater upgradeHeal the Ocean also runs a voluntary beach cleanup program, wherein school children can sign up for a beach to clean, under supervision of their teachers, receive a free Heal the Ocean T-shirt, then clean a beach and report to us what they pick up. These reports are published in Heal the Ocean newsletters and e-letters. Heal the Ocean is on steering committee of santa barbara county integrated regional water managements (irwm) program, and in this capacity are bringing septic-to-sewer and wastewater treatment plant upgrade projects into the program for state grant funding.Heal the Ocean has expanded through irwm program to locate state proposition 84 cleanwater funds for upgrading wasterwater treatment plants to recycling wastewater (as a way of keeping it out of the ocean), and instead of ocean disposal providing water for irrigation to allay 75% of california water supply being used for irrigation, under 20-20 mandate of state of california (20% reduced use/20% find new sources of water)Heal the ocean also runs sponsorship of dog bag program with the county of santa barbara, raises money to provide funds to the county to pay for dog bags in santa barbara south coast beach dispensers, as well as directly purchase dog bags for 3 dispensers in montecito area.Septic: 135 homes converted from septic to sewer (61 homes in 2012 74 in 2013)Town of los olivos/business owners, working with heal the ocean on septic to sewer conversion; long term goal, helping business men form association to conduct prop 218 vote to levy properties; by spring 2014 have grant application into santa barbara county irwm for $2 million to allay costs;Individual homes (3) in montecito connected to sewer with heal the ocean help (2012)24 sessions (2 per month 2012-2013) santa barbara county irwm sessions (steering committee, recucled water study committee) to achieve grant application to state through prop 84 for: $3 million city of santa barbara recycled water facility upgrade $650k goleta water district-city of santa barbara interconnect project(water conveyance) $600k twitchell reservoir sedimentation management $685K improvements to city of guadalupe waste water treatment plant $1.5 million - laguna county sanitation district recycled water pipeline extention to ranch maria golf course. 6 sacramento sessions 2012-2013 state AB 885 regulations - to formulate regulations with other groups/environmental health directors, regulations were law in May 2013. 12 sessions (2 in 2013, 10 more sessions from now until May 2014) to work with Santa Barbara county environmental health services to develop local area management plan (lamp) for septic regulations under AB 885. Sewer: 12 sessions in 2012/irwm planning steering committee: Goleta sanitary district upgrade; with heal the ocean help resulting in $500,000 grant to GSD for co-generation facility. 24 sessions in 2012-2013/irwm plan steering COmmittee: city of santa barbara recycled water facility $6 million upgrade, with HTO sponsorship, $3 million grant successfully inluded in 2013 IRWM/Prop 84 grant application to the state.
