Activity 2

Education excellence fund the issues affecting hispanic student achievement are well chronicled, including the lack of quality affordable pre-school education, low english reading comprehension, lack of role models, and low enrollment in high school math and science courses needed for college. These are just a few of the factors contributing low numbers of hispanics pursuing hi-tech careers. San jose is the nation's tenth largest city, and we pride ourselves as the "capital of silicon valley." the hispanic population of silicon valley is close to 30%, yet our representation in the ranks of local hi-tech firms is far below that level.the foundation strongly believes that the future of our hispanic community in silicon valley, california, and the nation depends on the current generation of students being more successful in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (stem) curriculum. To this end we are pursuing partnerships with other foundations, corporations, and business, education and community leaders to address the enrollment and graduation rates of hispanic students in these fields. The hfsv and its partners, silicon valley education foundation (svef) and alearn sponsored a summer program titled stepping up to algebra (suta) and map acceleration program (map). This summer program was for 4 hours/day for 4 weeks and served over 1,500 students in 15 school districts. Additionally, the hfsv launched a year round program titled the algebra review program (arp). The arp is 3 hour program that serves 500 students on two saturdays each month.about 2,000 people benefited from this program.

Activity 3

Latino board leadership academy hispanic philanthropy is driven by a sense of connection to la comunidad- a network of friends, neighbors, and the broader hispanic community. A study conducted by the hispanic foundation found latinos greatly under-report their volunteer activity. For hispanics who volunteered, the number of hours spent volunteering each month was highest among all ethnic groups studied. However, latinos do not yet have a leadership role in the region's nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. To address the leadership gap and to better understand the level of latino board leadership needs of silicon valley nonprofits, hfsv has been working with professional associations and nonprofit leaders. While 85% of organizations who participated in a survey indicated that their organizations want greater hispanic representation on their boards, 65% reported difficulty in recruiting from this segment of the population. Working with its partners the hfsv has developed the latino board leadership academy (lbla), a comprehensive program designed to recruit and train latinos to serve as potential board members, and match them with boards of non-profit organizations whose missions best match their personal interests. The focus on latino professionals, combined with the purposeful implementation of comprehensive follow-up, differentiates the lbla from other community leadership development initiatives. Hfsv's partners include compasspoint, the center for excellence in nonprofits, and the health trust. The lbla graduated its first class of senior fellows in june, 2011.about 60 people benefited from this program.
