FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

The hispanic foundation of silicon valley is a public foundation dedicated to inspiring community philanthropy and engaging people to invest in the educational achievement, leadership development, research, and convening and engaging the hispanic community to improve the quality of life for latinos and the silicon valley region.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

In 2011 the hispanic foundation of silicon valley (hfsv) published the first silicon valley latino report card to better understand latinos' livelihood in silicon valley. The report results provided substantial data, analysis, and comparisons about the challenges latinos face every day and sharpened hfsv's mission to improve the quality of life for latinos in silicon valley through education. In early 2014, hfsv went into latino neighborhoods and asked families to participate in a survey, a project that generated over 2,000 responses. The result of this was the voices of change report published in late 2014. The report indicated that 40% of the participants place education as the most important challenge, and increasing youth programs to prevent student dropouts is the solution. In 2016, the hispanic foundation college success center (hfcsc) was designed for latinx youths and parents to increase educational opportunities. Our hfcsc is a one-stop hub that encapsulates our "cradle to career" course of action that empowers elementary school, middle school, high school, college students, and their parents to excel through education efforts and understand the importance of a college education. The hfcsc helps students and parents obtain information on college access, advice, guidance, workshops, and online resources. The hfcsc is run by two full-time hfsv staff and an intern from santa clara university. Melissa canela, education programs manager, joined the team in march of 2020 and is responsible for overseeing the hfcsc and building community partnerships. Karla mondragon became education programs coordinator in january 2021. In her role, karla handles program logistics and partner collaborations with current and new programs. Carolyn valencia joined the hfcsc team as the education programs intern in october of 2020. She brought a new level of charisma and analytical skills to the team with her educational background in finance.

The latino board leadership academy trains latinos to volunteer their time in leadership roles as board members of nonprofits in our region. Less than 3% of latinos serve on nonprofit boards in silicon valley. We recruit, train, and guide latinos to maximize their impact. This 10-week academy trains latinos on how to serve in leadership roles as board members of nonprofits in silicon valley. Lbla addresses the leadership gap by recruiting, training, and guiding latinos to maximize their power of giving. Fellows will develop skills as a leader, integrate cultural competence, and be connected to a strong network of peers across silicon valley. Leadership development programs like the lbla, alongside our education excellence initiatives, are vital to advancing and improving the quality of life for the latinx community in silicon valley.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Although latinos represent 28% of the total population in silicon valley, only 3% are in the hi-tech workforce. With 39% of the k-12 student population identified as latino, we anticipate the challenge to continue to grow. The latinos in technology scholarship (lits), established by the hispanic foundation of silicon valley in 2015, is available to college juniors and seniors in good standing who are pursuing a college degree in a stem- related field. This program's goal is to provide financial support to latino students to facilitate college graduation and support a robust pipeline of latino professionals in stem. The scholarship provides up to 10,000 in annual financial support for up to three years. Successful metrics of our program include on-time graduation of all supported students, interest in stem-related degrees, and successful conversion of hires for a significant percentage of supported students upon completion of their degree.

IN 2016, THE HISPANIC FOUNDATION COLLEGE SUCCESS CENTER (HFCSC) WAS DESIGNED FOR LATINX YOUTHS AND PARENTS TO INCREASE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.
