IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0THE SAN JOSE CHORAL PROJECT STARTED ITS 16TH SEASON WITH A HOST OF FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT THE CHORAL PROJECT'S TRIP TO SPAIN, WHERE IT PARTICIPATED IN THE TOLOSA INTERNATIONAL CHORAL MUSIC FESTIVAL AND COMPETITION. IN JULY & AUGUST 2011, THE ORGANIZATION ORGANIZED ITS FIRST "KICK STARTER PROGRAM" TO RAISE 10,000 TO HIRE AND PAY TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR A VIDEOGRAPHER TO RECORD THE TRIP. IN SEPTEMBER 2011, THE SAN JOSE CHORAL PROJECT HELD ITS FIRST EVER GOLF TOURNAMENT TO RAISE MONEY TO PAY FOR TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR THE EXECUTIVE STAFF. WITH THE HELP OF SEVEN CORPORATE SPONSORS, WE RAISED APPROXIMATELY 20,000 AT THE EVENT. THEN, IN OCTOBER, THE ORGANIZATION HELD ITS 3RD ANNUAL SEASON OPENING CONCERT AND FUNDRAISER, TITLED SONG & CHANCE, WHERE IT RAISED ANOTHER 4000 TO SUPPORT THE TRIP. DURING A 2 WEEK TRIP IN LATE OCTOBER AND EARLY NOVEMBER 2011, THE CHORAL PROJECT GAVE CONCERTS IN 5 SPANISH TOWNS INCLUDING SALAMANCA, BURGOS, ZARAUTZ, POLANCO, AND AOIZ. UNFORTUNATELY, A CONCERT IN MADRID WAS CANCELLED DUE TO A CANCELLED FLIGHT ON WHICH MOST OF THE CHORUS WAS TRAVELING TO SPAIN. THE CULMINATION OF THE TRIP WAS PARTICIPATING IN THE TOLOSA INTERNATIONAL CHORAL COMPETITION. AND, ALTHOUGH THE GROUP DID NOT PLACE, THE GROUP'S PERFORMANCE WAS WELL RECEIVED, AND THE CULTURAL EXCHANGE EVENT WAS ONE THAT WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED BY ALL. IN FEBRUARY, THE CHORAL PROJECT PARTICIPATED IN A UNIQUE CONCERT WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO GAY MEN'S CHORAL (SFGMC), ENTITLED ENCHANTINGLY WICKED, THAT CELEBRATED THE MUSIC OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ. THE CHORAL PROJECT PERFORMED BOTH WITH SFGMC AND ALONE TO TWO NIGHTS OF SOLD-OUT AUDIENCES AT DAVIES SYMPHONY HALL. SOME OF THE MUSIC PERFORMED WAS SPECIFICALLY COMPOSED/ARRANGED FOR THE CONCERT INCLUDING THE WORLD PREMIER OF "TESTIMONY", A PIECE BASED UPON SELECTED TEXTS FROM THE "IT GETS BETTER PROJECT". IN FEBRUARY, MENHARMONICS GAVE ITS 3RD ANNUAL VALENTINE'S DAY INSPIRED CONCERT, TITLED LOVE SONGS. IN APRIL, THE CHORAL PROJECT GAVE A TOUR-DE-FORCE CONCERT OF CHALLENGING WORKS BY ERIC WHITACRE, JOHN TAVENER, AND ARVO PRT - THREE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED, LIVING CHORAL COMPOSERS. IN JUNE, THE CHORAL PROJECT AND MENHARMONICS SHARED THE STAGE FOR EARTHSONGS, A CONCERT THAT CELEBRATES DIVERSITY, INTERCONNECTEDNESS, AND THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY. IN THIS CONCERT, AMONG OTHERS THE THREE WINNING PIECES FROM OUR 4TH ANNUAL STUDENT COMPETITION CONTEST WERE PERFORMED BY THE CHORAL PROJECT. AS WITH PREVIOUS YEARS, THESE PIECES WERE WARMLY RECEIVED BY OUR AUDIENCE, ESPECIALLY THE STUNNING BENEATH THE WAVE (BY LUKE FLYNN) WHICH WAS DEDICATED TO ALL THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE RECENT JAPANESE TSUNAMI. WE PRESENTED THE WINNERS WITH 1000, 500, AND 250 SCHOLARSHIPS AND CERTIFICATES. THE SEASON CONCLUDED WITH PREPARATIONS FOR A TRIP TO THE GALA CONFERENCE IN DENVER, AT WHICH BOTH THE CHORAL PROJECT AND MENHARMONICS PERFORMED. THE CONFERENCE WAS ACTUALLY DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF JULY, RIGHT AFTER THE END OF OUR FISCAL YEAR; HOWEVER, ALL FISCAL AND LOGISTICAL PREPARATIONS WERE MADE DURING THE 2011-12 SEASON. IN 2011-12, OUR STUDENTS4FREE PROGRAM WELCOMED ALL CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS THROUGH THE 12TH GRADE TO OUR CONCERTS FOR FREE. OVER THE YEARS, HUNDREDS OF CHILDREN HAVE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF THIS PROGRAM, AND WE INTEND TO CONTINUE WITH THIS PROGRAM IN FUTURE SEASONS TO HELP INSPIRE THE SINGERS OF THE FUTURE.
