Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Organization's primary purpose is to conduct research and educational activities with regard to the sustainable production, manufacturing and use practices throughout the cotton value chain in order to create a healthy industry for growers, their communities, manufacturers, retailers and users of cotton products.Since 2010, the organization has added the sustainable production of alfalfa and almonds to the organization, encouraging the use of biologically based production practices in these two crops as well as cotton. Since 1996, SCP has brought farmers, manufacturers, and consumers together. SCP's guiding philosophy of "cooperation for a change" fosters information-sharing among these groups to develop a Cleaner Cotton industry. SCP provides growers with information about biological farming techniques and educates the public about the importance of reducing chemical use in fiber and food production and supporting local farmers.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
SCPs grant with Californias State Water Resources Control Board ended on June 30, 2019. The purpose of the grant was to help farmers implement agricultural Best Management Practices, including integrated pest management practices in the cultivation of cotton, alfalfa, and almonds, and to reduce the use of diazinon and chlorpyrifos. The Organization continues to provide information about California cotton and cotton production and answers questions about the Cleaner Cotton industry and Cleaner Cotton fiber availability. Textile and apparel brands continue to be interested in this product, and SCP plans to continue marketing the fiber. SCP was able to help the two retiring growers from Windfall Farms sell some of their stored colored cotton fiber along with a small hand-gin that had been purchased for the processing of the colored cotton. The Organizations Executive Director participated in several webinars on cotton in California and participated in discussions on a Healthy Soils project that has several former SCP growers as participants. Plans for 2020 included a cotton farm tour to be sponsored by the California College of the Arts (San Francisco). Due to Covid-19 and restrictions on public gatherings, the tour sponsor, Cotton Inc., asked that the tour be postponed until another time. The website server hosting SCPs website suffered a catastrophic failure during 2020. Efforts to rebuild the site have been ongoing, and the site is expected to be operational by mid-2021.$12,339$200
