Mission and Program Overview
Mission
Wicomico Environmental Trust supports protecting the environment, with special emphasis on the Wicomico River, its tributaries, and the paleochannel, and other policies that preserve and protect nature in our county and the Chesapeake Bay region. We work with other nonprofits, government, businesses, and individuals to keep or water, forests, and farmland beautiful and healthy for future generations to enjoy.

| During 2017 WET continued its partnership program with the Wicomico Creekwatchers water quality monitoring group. The Creekwatchers group is a grassroots volunteer-based organization, now in its 15th year of monitoring the health of the Wicomico River. The Creekwatchers program assesses the health of the Wicomico River with financial support provided by the City of Salisbury and Wicomico County, technical expertise and scientific analysis provided by Salisbury University, and administrative and infrastructure support provided by the Wicomico Environmental Trust. During 2017, over 38 citizen scientists monitored the Wicomico River and its tributaries in Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore region beginning in mid-March through early November. Sites monitored by the Creekwatchers included not only the Wicomico River, but also Wicomico Creek, East Prong, Shiles Creek, Rockawalkin Creek, Coulbourne Mill Pond, Johnson Pond, Parker Pond, Schumaker Pond and Tony Tank. Salisbury University's water quality analyses included chlorophyll a, salinity, pH, nitrogen (nitrate and total nitrogen,) and phosphorus (phosphate and total phosphorus). Eight of these sites are additionally sampled in warmer months for fecal bacterial levels. The results of these analyses are made publicly available on an annual basis, and inform local government decision-making processes where the Chesapeake Bay total maximum daily load (TMDL) is of concern. | $14,354 | $5,835 |
| The Wicomico Interfaith Partners for Creation Stewardship (WIPCS) was founded in 2015 as a project of the Wicomico Environmental Trust and with help and guidance from Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake. WIPCS is a coalition of faith and lay leaders who have come together to foster dialogue and action among diverse faith communities around environmental stewardship and Creation Care. WIPCS offers a place where individuals and congregations can build bonds of friendship and understanding while gathering to share their faith's traditions, especially about stewardship of the natural world. WIPCS involves 25 local Eastern Shore congregations. WIPCS sponsored the Climate Change Speakers Series (September - November, 2017) and a Two-Day Earth Day Event entitled "Rising Seas: A Faith Response" (April 2017). | $2,446 | $2,446 |
| Wicomico Environmental Trust volunteers and staff conducted a four-day environmental education workshop, funded by Horizons Salisbury, for students in grades 7-9. Students learned the importance of watershed and water quality monitoring methods. They also surveyed streams for macroinvertibrates and learned about indicator species and watershed health. Additionally, WET volunteers and staff conducted a one-day environmental education program for students in grades 1-5. WIPCS is a coalition of faith and lay leaders who have come together to foster dialogue and action among diverse faith communities around environmental stewardship and Creation Care. WIPCS offers a place where individuals and congregations can build bonds of friendship and understanding while gathering to share their faith's traditions, especially about stewardship of the natural world. WIPCS involves 25 local Eastern Shore congregations. WIPCS sponsored the Climate Change Speakers Series (September - November, 2017) and a Two-Day Earth Day Event entitled "Rising Seas: A Faith Response" (April 2017). |
