Wicomico Environmental Trust supports protecting the environment, with special emphasis on the Wicomico River, its tributaries, and the paleochannel, and other policies that preserve and protect nature in our county and the Chesapeake Bay region. We work with other nonprofits, government, businesses, and individuals to keep or water, forests, and farmland beautiful and healthy for future generations to enjoy.

| Wicomico Environmental Trust's ("WET") received a grant from to create a program to bring faith groups together to support the environment. WET established the Faith and the Environment program to educate and undertake environmental restoration work with these groups. The work continued into 2016 and the program once finished spawned the Wicomico Interfaith Partners for Creation group who will continue and expand upon the program established by WET. | $4,350 | $25 |
| In 2013, grants were received by the Wicomico Environmental Trust ("WET") and others from the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, to complete a subwatershed assessment. The assessment including a stream assessment, an upland assessment, and a stormwater retrofit assessment, for the main "North Prong" tributaries of the Wicomico River. A team of project partners including WET, Wicomico Creekwaters, Center for Watershed Protections, City of Salisbury, and Wicomico County developed an assessment plan to complete the project. These assessments were completed in 2014 and incorporated into the 2014 update of the watershed management plan filed by the Wicomico County. More specifically, the management plans for the East and North prongs (i.e., the plans growing out of the first and third "North Prong" subwatershed assessments) provide the list of priorities, along with the attendant costs and benefits, to allow Salisbury's public works department to allocate the money available each year under the stormwater utility in the most cost-effective and efficient way. Additionally, some items of more immediate concern were identified and, as a result, rectified. In March 2015, WET held forum to discuss the stormwater utility and its impact on residents and its ability to prevent flooding and contribute to the water quality of the river. To further educate the public in protecting the water, WET published the brochure, Water Words That Work. This several years long project cumulated with the City of Salisbury's passage of a stormwater utility designed to provide money to maintain and upgrade Salisbury's aging and decaying stormwater system (some pipes have been in place for over a century). Maintaining the old stormwater infrastructure will lessen the chances that sections will collapse, and upgrading it will incorporate the latest best practices to reduce runoff from streets, parking lots, and driveways dumping oil, salt, pesticides, and other pollutants into our streams and ponds, the Wicomico River, and the Chesapeake Bay. | $0 | $748 |
| The Wicomico County Board of Education,("BOE"), in partnership with Wicomico Environmental Trust ("WET"), was awarded a grant in 2013 that provided for the planting of 130 trees along the Coty Cox branch of the Wicomico River in Fall 2013. The City of Salisbury's public works department drilled the holes for planting the trees and a sixth-grade class of Wicomico County students who were learning about water quality, along with WET and other community and BOE volunteers, planted the trees. $1,100 of the grant funds were earmarked for WET to provide the care needed to assure survival. The volunteer work continued throughout 2014 as the volunteers cared for, mulched, and watered the newly planted trees. All but one tree survived as a result of the maintenance efforts undertaken in 2014. The maintenance work continues into 2015 to ensure the trees continue to thrive. | ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt | 0 | During 2015, Wicomico Environmental Trust (WET) underwent a substantial change in employees and substantially reorganized its operating structure. We submit the following as explanation and reasonable cause for the failure to timely file Form 990. 1. The organization's Executive Director unexpectedly left the organization, and the board was without a Treasurer during 2013, 2014 and part of 2015; due to financial constraints, the Executive Director position was replaced with a part-time interim director position. 2. WET lost critical funding due to the loss of a substantial donor, and as a result, struggled to complete its books and records in a timely manner. 3. Due to the financial constraints, WET was unable to retain outside practitioner assistance with respect to its Form 990 filing obligations, and 4. WET, given the loss of its long-term executive director and the loss of its major funder, had only limited bookkeeping and administrative support, which contributed to its record-keeping difficulties. In 2016, additional board members and the new Treasurer have worked diligently to address these concerns, and, in addition to addressing their funding needs, has put in place policies and procedures to ensure effective administrative oversight going forward. |
