Houston Tomorrow serves on the Coordinating Committee and was influential in bringing a $3.75 million federal Sustainable Communities grant to pursue the first 13-county Regional Plan for Sustainable Development.Through our Geographic Information Systems research, HT helps planners recognize the polycentric nature of a region with dozens of regional activity centers surrounded by hundreds of smaller communities. Attention to these economic clusters will result in easier access to work, home, shopping, schools, and other services. It launched the Texas Triangle Conference, a collaboration of leaders from the metro regions of Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston to talk about infrastructure, environment, and economic growth for this emerging global giant.In 1999, we began the current public conversation about high speed rail among these cities.HT serves citizens and decision makers with its dynamic website and newsletter. The website is the go-to place in Houston and Texas for information and ideas about quality of life, transportation and land use, health and wellbeing, and policies to promote all of these. Our e-newsletter is sent weekly to nearly 3,000 thought leaders, who are the best-informed people in the Houston region. TOMORROW, a free magazine, supports the region with news and information promoting healthy living and a green environment. Our Environmental Education Program uses the magazine to provides locally relevant curriculum to high school students.Our Food Policy Work Group works to ensure that food is plentiful, local, and nutritious. Houston Tomorrow forms coalitions to promote public policies for a sustainable Houston; supporting healthy neighborhoods with a variety of amenities and services, encouraging green space for our citizens, current and future, while protecting arable land for food requirements.
