Mission

Aids foundation houston, inc. (afh) is a nonprofit corporation founded in 1982 and was among texas' first organizations dedicated to hiv prevention education and services. Afh provides stabilizing and prevention services including testing, support services, education, benefits and resources counseling, case management, housing, and food and nutrition assistance to the community and low-income, hiv+ men, women, and children. Afh's mission is to end the hiv epidemic in the greater houston area.aids foundation houston, inc. Envisions a community where hiv is stigma-free and rare, and people have equitable access to care.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Prevention ServicesProject Vibe is a comprehensive youth program that provides pediatric drop-in centers, outreach, transportation, and case management for youth living with HIV. Pediatric drop-in centers at Thomas Street Clinic and Bering Dental Center provide childcare while parents, guardians, or custodians have medical appointments. Youth outreach includes formal and informal, individual and group-level interventions, education, and skills training to increase the number of HIV+ youth who enter the HIV care system for ongoing healthcare and support services. AFH follows outreach with case management providing family-centered, developmentally appropriate case management and transportation services to adolescents with HIV/AIDS.Popular Opinion Leader is a three-session, group-level intervention that decreases the number of new infections by enlisting and training key community leaders to encourage safer sexual norms and behaviors within their social networks through conversations about risk reduction and being a role model for low-risk behavior.Focus on Youth is an eight-session, group-level intervention that uses fun interactive activities to give youth and their parents the skills and knowledge they need to protect themselves from HIV and other STDs. This program includes a 90-minute parental monitoring session with the parent and child.Counseling, Testing, and Referral provides HIV and syphilis testing services to at-risk target populations and within specific zip codes.Major Testing Events Houston Splash/Hip Hop for HIV Awareness is a structural intervention that provides group-level education and skills training as well as individual testing counseling and referral services. It is the nations largest testing event.Project START is a six-session, individual-level intervention that provides HIV, STD, and hepatitis risk reduction programming for people returning to the community after incarceration. The program is designed to help individuals identify current and/or past high-risk behaviors and develop individualized, step-by-step solutions that help them reduce these behaviors.Get Started is an individual one or two-session intervention that connects HIV+ minorities recently released from prison to the Texas HIV Medication Program.Project Wall Talk is a community-level, peer-based HIV, STD, tuberculosis, and hepatitis prevention education program that provides health education training to incarcerated offenders who then share the information with their peers helping them make informed decisions about their behaviors.VOICES/VOCES is a single-session, group-level intervention that uses video and role-playing to increase condom use and safer sex negotiation skills among African American and Hispanic heterosexual men and women, and men who have sex with men.The T.R.U.T.H. Project is a community-level intervention that addresses HIV prevention education through risk topics including abuse, stigma, bullying, and discrimination using different performance art forms. This program also provides counseling, testing, and referral services for HIV and syphilis.

Volunteer ServicesCamp Hope began in July 1996 as the first camp designed specifically for children ages 7-15 with HIV/AIDS in Texas. Since its inaugural year, the camp has expanded from a three-day summer pilot program for 22 Houston-area children to a full-week program that has served more than 1,800 participants in the last 18 years.The Teen Leadership Forum serves youth ages 16-19 who are living with HIV/AIDS but aging out of traditional summer camp programs. The Teen Leadership Forum is held on a college campus and involves teens in discussing topics such as continuing education, career options, dating, intimacy, and disclosure issues.The Red Ribbon Toy Drive is a collaboration with local medical and social service providers that collects more than 6,600 toys during the holidays for 1,200 infected or affected children.

M.S.G., Teaching Empowerment to eXit Transitional Housing by Managing Secure Goals provides a permanent supportive housing solution for chronically homeless disabled young adults between the ages of 18-24 living with HIV/AIDS.First Responders promotes the development of housing and supportive services to assist homeless persons in the transition from the streets and shelters to permanent housing and self-sufficiency.Urban Stone Soup provides food for individuals who are HIV+ and are homeless or low-income. Rural Stone Soup provides food vouchers for rural assistance.Burress Street Apartments serves 45 single women who are at risk of becoming homelessness or have become homeless.Chupik House provides non-time-limited housing for up to 10 single men who are at risk for becoming homeless.Help House is located in a 22-unit apartment complex and serves low-income individuals or couples at risk for becoming homeless with non-time-limited housing. The goal is to increase access to income and mainstream benefits, decrease expenses, and provide a permanent housing facility for HIV positive individuals. A Friendly Haven provides a unique housing initiative for families living with HIV/AIDS and assists families to achieve a greater sense of self-determination to enable them to establish and maintain self-sufficiency beyond homelessness to permanent housing.Project Life Road provides transitional supportive housing and supportive services for homeless individuals and families who are living with HIV/AIDS. The program is designed to move participants to permanent housing by increasing their employment skills and income level to enable them to achieve greater self-determination and self-sufficiency.
