Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A, Narrative of Program Service Accomplishments

Founded by artists in 1982, diverseworks is nationally known for its groundbreaking artistic programming, meaningful engagement with communities, and advancement of progressive art and ideas in houston and the nation. The organization provides commissioning opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists to create new multidisciplinary work, and acts as a launching pad for young artists, collective and future arts organizations. Diverseworks supports artists and projects that inspire dialogue about contemporary issues and culture and offer experiential and progressive works of art that compel viewers to broaden their perceptions of what art is and how art can be a critical tool for addressing social, cultural, and aesthetic concerns. Major programs in 2020-2021 sara dittrich: the tender interval (september 23 november 14, 2020 online) baltimore-based sara dittrich's the tender interval was a fully virtual project that took the form of interactive, durational performances broadcast via twitch.tv and dws website. The work encourages participants to slow down, engage in sensory perception, and find poetic refuge in moments of crisis. Through this work, dittrich engaged in repetitive gestures that focus on the body's circadian rhythms and used biosensors as performative objects to track heartbeats and footsteps as a means of close listening and ecological healing. Yue nakayama: nonplus (september 23 november 14, 2020 online and in-person) houston-based yue nakayama's nonplus examines the ideas of empathy and survival in relation to the current societal and environmental crisis. This hybrid virtual/in-person project took the form of a performance video and a socially-distanced outdoor sculptural installation, and video screening in houston's buffalo bayou park. Nakayama encourages viewers to reflect upon the interconnectedness of our belief systems, ideas of procreation and extinction, and empathy-related emotions connected to maternity. Project freeway fellowship (august - december 2020 online and in-person) the project freeway fellowship was developed in 2018 response to the rapid growth and diversification of the city of houston and diverseworks' desire to support artists in the areas where they live and to encourage recognition of the important contributions that bipoc and lgbtqi+ artists are making within their neighborhoods. The two fellows who were selected from a pool of applicants to receive financial and mentorship support to create new artistic projects in their neighborhoods were photographer brian ellison / the black man project (third ward) and writer jeffrey bussey (highway 288 corridor). Visionary futures (february 19 april 11, 2021 online) this completely online exhibition explored questions about the future through the personal lenses of queer, non-binary artists of color. Featured artists, antonius-tn bui, chandrika, lovie olivia, preetika rajgariah, s rodriguez, y2k, and time zone, imagined possible trajectories through virtual performances, programs, visualizations, and gestures, highlighting queer and non-binary communities as being on the forefront of cultural and social change. Open dance project all the devils are here: a tempest in the galapagos (may 14 15, 2021 livestream / may 17 31, 2021 video on demand) this immersive livestreamed dance performance collides shakespeare's the tempest with the true story of an unsolved murder in the galapagos islands. The work was inspired by the attempts of a nihilist couple, a conservative family, and a baroness and her two gay lovers to escape fascism on the uninhabited island of floreana in 1929. Their conflicting visions of paradise, sexual and moral "rightness," colonial instincts, and social and psychological demons lead to disaster and provide a rich canvas to examine contemporary issues of human rights, social justice, and power structures.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0FOUNDED BY ARTISTS IN 1982, DIVERSEWORKS IS NATIONALLY KNOWN FOR ITS GROUNDBREAKING ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING, MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH COMMUNITIES, AND ADVANCEMENT OF PROGRESSIVE ART AND IDEAS IN HOUSTON AND THE NATION.
