Major programs in 2018-2019 lily cox-richard: berm, september 22 - november 3, 2018 lily cox-richard's sculpture used reclaimed materials, crafted objects, and the space around them to push up against institutional frameworks and existing architecture to explore modes of viewing, perspective, and accessibility. The exhibition took place within the bottom seventeen inches of the gallery, adhering to and highlighting the particulars of the match architecture, with the prime vantage point being from the sidewalk outside, where viewers were invited to look through custom periscopes, lie on a dolly, or simply take a knee to see the exhibition installation. Autumn knight: m_ _ _er, november 2-3, 2018 interdisciplinary artist autumn knight premiered a new performance project, "m _ _ _ er", that employs visual mapping, character improvisation, social engagement and visual art, and takes on a broad range of subjects including interiority, dissonance, ritual, and humor. "m_ _ _ er" is a national performance network/visual artist network (npn/van) creation & development fund project co-commissioned by diverseworks, on the boards (seattle), and women & their work (austin) that travels through the 2020 season. The seldoms residency, january 28 - february 2, 2019 diverseworks hosted the seldoms, a chicago-based dance company, for a week-long residency during which they investigated climate change in houston, including the impact of hurricane harvey on the city and its residents through interviews. This research was to inform the development of their work-in-progress, floe, a new dance theater piece about climate instability: the vanishing polar ice, rising sea levels, extreme weather, forced migration, the tension between denial and evidence, and adaptation and resilience. Diverseworks collaborated with the rothko chapel to present the seldoms' "dancing on thin ice," an excerpt of the work-in-progress to a packed house. Collective presence, february 21 - april 14, 2019 an exhibition, artist residency program and hub for creative and cultural activity to address social, political, and environmental issues of the gulf of mexico and caribbean regions, "collective presence created a collective call-and-response between audiences and artists utilizing futurist and decolonizing practices. Artists rabea ballin (houston), joshua rios (chicago), rafa esparza (los angeles), and awilda rodriguez lora (puerto rico) participated in two-week mini-residencies in the gallery during which they created new work on site; met with houston artists, activists, and organizers; and participated in public programs.
