Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A, Narrative of Program Service Accomplishments

Founded by artists in 1982, diverseworks has been a recognized national leader for its groundbreaking programming; as a resource for the innovative and meaningful engagement of communities; as a commissioner of contemporary works in multiple media; and as a force that has shaped contemporary thought and practice in houston and the nation. Diverseworks is a leader in the nationwide movement of artist-centered organizations and is a vital presence in national organizations such as the national performance network, common field, and the association of art museum curators. Diverseworks serves as a forum for issues and works that have no other public outlet in houston, and plays a similar role nationally. Diverseworks provides first-time commissioning opportunities for emerging artists, continued support for innovative mid-career artists, and acts as a launching pad for young artists and arts organizations. Diverseworks supports artists and projects that inspire dialogue about contemporary culture among artists, audiences, and the greater community. Diverseworks is a local and national source for high quality experiential and progressive works of art that compel viewers to broaden their perceptions of what art is and how art can be a critical tool for addressing social, cultural, and aesthetic concerns. Major programs in 2015-16: katie grinnan: nocturnal hologram, september 11 - november 14, 2015 this exhibition of los angeles-based artist katie grinnan's sculpture, photography, sound, and video works investigated the relationship between visual and cognitive experience. This exhibition was the first solo presentation of grinnan's work in texas. In conjunction with the exhibition, katie performed astrology orchestra, on november 14, 2015 at the turrell skyspace at rice university. Grinnan and diverseworks worked with music students from rice, as well as artists and musicians from the community to perform this experimental symphonic work. What shall we do next? January 15 - march 19, 2016 diverseworks opened its first season at its new home at the match with an exhibition that featured sculpture, video, painting, installation and live performance events by danielle dean (houston), kristin lucas (austin), versace versace versace (miami), and julien pr vieux (paris). The exhibition explored ideas of the "real" in relationship to physical materials, technology, and the body. Artist talks, panel discussions, and a curator's walk-through took place, and pr vieux created a new dance performance that was presented in the mb1 black box theatre. Ten tiny dances, april 12, 2016 this performance evening was presented in the mb1 black box theatre in collaboration with the uh mitchell center for the arts as the opening event for counter current, an experimental performance festival. Ten artists and choreographers created new performance works on a 4 x 4-foot stage. The school for the movement of the technicolor people, april 30 - may 28, 2016 this exhibition consisted of a large-scale installation and performance platform created by multidisciplinary artist, performer, and choreographer taisha paggett and her collaborators ashley hunt, kim zumpfe, and wxpt. The gallery was reconfigured to operate as a dance and movement rehearsal studio, experimental classroom, and performance space where the artists researched their ongoing question, "what is a black dance curriculum today?" in the context of houston. Free public classes and workshops taught by houston-based members of wxpt, a temporary, experimental community of queer people of color and allies, dancers and non-dancers, were held every saturday. Sheila pepe invites sondra perry: a cooler place + i'm afraid i can't do that, june 11 - august 6, 2016 this exhibition included the installation and extension of pepe's large-scale fabric work, "put me down gently," along with several newly commissioned work-station sculptures that served as areas for community conversations and other collaborative ev
