Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A, Narrative of Program Service Accomplishments

Founded by artists in 1982, diverseworks is nationally known for its groundbreaking artistic programming, meaningful engagement with communities, and advancement of progressive art and ideas in houston and the nation. The organization provides commissioning opportunities for emerging and mid-career artists to create new multidisciplinary work, and acts as a launching pad for young artists, collective and future arts organizations. Diverseworks supports artists and projects that inspire dialogue about contemporary issues and culture and offer experiential and progressive works of art that compel viewers to broaden their perceptions of what art is and how art can be a critical tool for addressing social, cultural, and aesthetic concerns. Major programs in 2023-24: li(sa e.) harris in collaboration with alisha wormsley: d.r.e.a.m. = a way to afram (september 7-9, 2023, match box 3, houston) a newly commissioned work for which harris considers two dream spheres colliding: black people resting in peace, merging with the sounds of the earth's dreams. The project featured an installation, live performance and meditation workshops. The project featured harris along with vocalist michelle coltrane, dancer abijan johnson, vocalist and performance artist mr. Hotspot, experimental musician and composer joy guidry, and the houston boy choir. Finding my team: little amal visits gulfton (october 19, 2023, burnett bayland park, houston) little amal is a 12-foot puppet, designed and built by handspring puppet company, of a 10-year-old syrian refugee child who has become a global symbol of human rights, this work was presented as part of amal's 6,000-mile journey across the united states and was produced by diverseworks in partnership with brave little company in the neighborhood of gulfton. Community partners and participating artists included: afsaneh aayani, apollo chamber players, adam castaneda, eepi chaad, sherry cheng, hessam dianpour, bennie flores ansell, windsync. Amaanah refugee services, amaanah lions, connect community, developing today's potential foundation (dtp), madres del parque, and the ser-ninos middle school eagles. Jocelyn cottencin & emmanuelle huynh: lands-portrait of the city of houston (november 7-9, 2023, match box 2, houston) this commissioned multimedia performance examines the past and present of houston and its growth toward becoming the 4th largest city in the united states. It featured a series of outdoor performances that french artists cottencin and huynh choreographed and performed with their houston-based collaborators: liyen chong, ayla davis, isabella mireles, roger moore, and henry g. Sanchez and a film installation. The project was developed through a series of artist site visits, interviews with a wide range of houstonians, and public workshops from fall 2022 through the summer 2023. In the film, images of buffalo bayou and choreographed movements within the city of houston are interwoven with voice overs of the perceptions of houstonians as they correspond with their personal histories, cultures, and beliefs. Laura gutierrez:in tarps i trust (february 22-24, 2024, match box 1, houston) this new dance work by laura gutierrez, commissioned by diverseworks, is inspired by themes of labor, specifically blue-collar jobs. The work explores the physical labor gutierrez witnessed throughout her father's decades-long career as a billboard painter in houston, highlighting the materials that were ever present growing up in her household, such as tarps, ladders, and ratchet straps. Using these materials, gutierrez focuses on their awkward and imposing nature, before gradually incorporating them into dance and movement phrases such that they become partners in space. Anthony almendarez: hello, my name is ____ (march 1-16, 2024, match box 1, houston) this multi-channel video and sound installation draws upon survey questions related to employment and labor policies in the united states to engage in a dialogue around
