Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

Two members of The Justice League's Board of Trustees are employed by the same employer-Rosati Windows.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The Board of Trustees is presented a copy of IRS Form 990 along with all accompanying schedules prior to filing. The Board reviews Form 990 and all schedules along with the Agency's Controller. Once the 990 and all accompanying schedules are approved by the Board, Form 990 and all supporting schedules are filed with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

As soon as a Board member becomes aware of a potential conflict of interest, the member is required to report the potential conflict to the Board at-large. The Board at-large then determines the appropriate action to be taken.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The Justice League uses salary information from other similar organizations as well as salary surveys for comparable positions within the State of Ohio in order to support the salary ranges that it uses for both its Executive Director as well as other key employee positions.

Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center provides free legal representation to crime victims to ensure crime victims are treated with fairness, dignity, respect, and their rights are enforced, provides free victims rights training to nurses, advocates, counselors, social workers, law enforcement, prosecutors, courts and community organizations to ensure consistent application of crime victims rights laws, and provides crime victims and advocates technical assistance and a valuable self-help tool to aid crime victims in understanding and exercising their rights, the Victims Rights Toolkit.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

Program Service Accomplishment #1-Expenses: $146,663 including Grants of $0. Form 990, Part III, Line 4a - $146,663 expenses Ohio Crime Victim Justice Center (OCVJC) successfully represented over 320 crime victims during the 2015 calendar year. Representation included protecting crime victim privacy in child & adult sexual violence cases, domestic violence, and attempted murder cases, protecting crime victims right to object to substantial delay in prosecution, right to be present, right to notification, and restitution. OCVJC filed an Amicus Brief in an appellate court in support of a minor crime victim's parents right to receive restitution as well as a victim's representative's right to be present during closed circuit testimony of the child victim. The successful litigation to protect and enforce victims' rights not only provides much needed assistance to the victims OCVJC serves, but establishes compelling and substantive case law that has a profound effect on the enforcement of crime victims' rights laws. OCVJC worked with local advocates to organize in-person multidisciplinary trainings in their communities to hospital personnel, advocates, law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, domestic violence shelters, rape crisis centers, community groups, and schools. OCVJC incentivized attorney, judge, and social worker participation by offering these programs free of charge and providing continuing legal education credit and continuing education units. OCVJC entered into partnerships and established MOU's with two unique organizations designed to serve two drastically underserved populations; Pheonix Project to increase organizational capacity to provide culturally empowering, accessible, safe, and effective services to Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deaf Blind individuals who are victims of violence and abuse within the state of Ohio, and Coalition on Homelessness and Housing in Ohio (COHHIO) to develop resources that provide homeless and at-risk youth with information about their legal rights and remedies, as well as referrals to shelters, counseling, and other needed services.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B

Program Service Accomplishment #2- Expenses: $70,227 including Grants of $0. OCVJC has developed a, first-of-its-kind in the nation, Crime Victims' Rights Toolkit. This toolkit is a sophisticated and intuitive online resource designed for both state and federal crime victims and advocates. The toolkit provides an exhaustive list of rights, requirements, responsibilities and important information for crime victims to know. It also provides predrafted letters that victims can send to justice system officials to further assist victims in enforcing their rights. Disability Rights Ohio, Ohio School for the Deaf, BRAVO, ODVN, Action Ohio, Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, CASA Ohio, Ohio Hispanic Coalition, Capital University Law School, law enforcement, prosecutors, judges, and others have collaborated on the development of the Toolkit. OCVJC provides technical assistance to crime victims and advocates on the use of the Toolkit and enforcement of rights.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0OCVJC has developed a, first-of-its-kind in the nation, Crime Victims' Rights Toolkit. This toolkit is a sophisticated and intuitive online resource designed for both state and federal crime victims and advocates. The toolkit provides an exhaustive list of rights, requirements, responsibilities and important information for crime victims to know. It also provides pre-drafted letters that victims can send to justice system officials to further assist victims in enforcing their rights.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Program Service Accomplishment #1-Expenses: $146,663 including Grants of $0.
