| The annual Scientific Conference, quarterly Chapter meetings and collaborative care workshop provided the following:A) The scientific conference, "Current Challenges for Modern Psychiatrists," presented information regarding the unique liability risks that exist for the psychiatrists in the United States practicing addiction psychiatry. With substance abuse rampant in the adolescent population including those who are depressed and suicidal, updated information in the area of diagnoses and treatment of addictions and adolescent depression and suicide is critical to patient care. With the crisis presented by opioid use in this country, substance use in also prevalent in the aging psychiatric population. It is imperative, therefore, that a comprehensive view of addiction from basic science to clinical practice in the context of current medico-legal climate deserves the attention of all psychiatrists. How to sustain the membership and the health of our professional organization through advocacy efforts was discussed as psychiatrists must create our own comfort zone for the practice of psychiatry.B) The program "Ground Zero: Oklahoma's Shocking Opioid Epidemic: Risk Management Considerations when Practicing Addiction Psychiatry" was presented by each of the two local chapters through an expedited grant funded by the American Psychiatric Association. This program identified the ethical, policy and legal considerations when practicing addiction psychiatry and explained risk management and liability exposures when treating opioid addiction.c) The Central Oklahoma Psychiatric Society local chapter also sponsored the following programs: (a) Violence: Risk Management and Reduction; (b) Ketamine in Psychiatric Practice; (c) Rumination Disorder; (d) Childhood Suicide Prevention; (e) Learning the Art of Sleeping; (f) Advocacy for You and Me; and (g) Methamphetamine Neurotoxicity. The Tulsa Psychiatric Association local chapter also sponsored the following programs: (a) Tulsa Mental Health Plan; (b) Advocacy Training to Effect Membership and Legislative Outcomes; and (c) Resilience: A Look at the Science of Adverse Childhood Events. All programs were presented as a forum for examination of behavioral health and psychiatric practice issues for the advancement of science and medicine with the goal being to impact clinical practice leading to measurable changes in patient care outcomes.C) A half-day workshop on "Applying the Integrated Care Approach: Practical Skills for the Consulting Psychiatrist" provided psychiatric physician participants with the practical skills needed to work in collaborative care. The workshop discussed the delivery of mental health care in primary care settings with a focus on the evidence based, guiding principles and an introduction to implementation strategies. | $5,627 | - |
