The Oklahoma Psychiatric Physicians Association (OPPA), is dedicated to meeting the professional needs of its members and promoting quality treatment and prevention of mental illness and substance use disorders. In performing these functions, members of the OPPA are mindful of the unique history and cultural diversity of Oklahoma, and the influence of social determinants on health and outcomes. We aspire to model and support: * sensitivity and compassion for patients and their families * advocacy for mental health access and equity * promotion of diversity and inclusion * advancement and representation of the profession of psychiatry * lifelong professional learning and * the highest standards of professional conduct.

| The annual Scientific Conference of OPPA was held on April 24, 2024, at the Laureate Psychiatric Hospital Conference Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. "Increase in Adolescent and Physician Suicide: Hiccup or Trend?" provided attendees with 6 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Continuing Medical Education. Physicians discussed the understanding of etiology and neuroscientific mediators leading to suicides in adolescents and physicians; described the possible causes for the recent trend in the increased rate of suicides in adolescents and physicians; and explained the role of substance abuse in causation and contribution to suicides in adolescents and physicians and reasonable approaches to address both the treatment of psychopathology, social and work-related issues and management of substance abuse. A) The Central Oklahoma Psychiatric Society and the Tulsa Psychiatric Association (both local chapters) each sponsored additional seminars. Topics included: 1) "Medical Marijuana: High Risk?" - January 9, 2024 2) "A Case Study on the Evolution of Delusional Beliefs: From Persecutory Delusions to Capgras Syndrome-Like Phenomena and The Use of Anti-Inflammatory Diet as a Non-Pharmacological Intervention in Depression Treatment" - February 29, 2024 3) "Acknowledging Your Patient's Gender Identity: Why it Matters" - March 12,2024 4) "The Use of NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) in the Treatment of Substance Use, NSSI and More and Opioid Use Disorder Treatment in the Age of Fentanyl: Challenges and Opportunities" - June 1, 2024 5) "Minimizing Risk When Treating Depressed and Suicidal Patients" - July 29, 2024 6) "Dreams and Dreamwork and Quilting as Group Therapy" - September 19, 2024 7) "Feeling the Heat? Our Changing Climate and the Impacts on Our Health and The Mental Health Effects of Mass Shootings" - December 11, 2024 B) The Oklahoma Psychiatric Physicians Association also hosted its Annual Business and Membership meeting at the Doubletree Hotel-Warren Place, Tulsa on Saturday, April 20, 2024. "Increase in Adolescent and Physician Suicide: Hiccup or Trend?" provided attendees with 6 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Continuing Medical Education. Physicians discussed the understanding of etiology and neuroscientific mediators leading to suicides in adolescents and physicians; described the possible causes for the recent trend in the increased rate of suicides in adolescents and physicians; and explained the role of substance abuse in causation and contribution to suicides in adolescents and physicians and reasonable approaches to address both the treatment of psychopathology, social and work-related issues and management of substance abuse. A) The Central Oklahoma Psychiatric Society and the Tulsa Psychiatric Association (both local chapters) each sponsored additional seminars. Topics included: 1) "Medical Marijuana: High Risk?" - January 9, 2024 2) "A Case Study on the Evolution of Delusional Beliefs: From Persecutory Delusions to Capgras Syndrome-Like Phenomena and The Use of Anti-Inflammatory Diet as a Non-Pharmacological Intervention in Depression Treatment" - February 29, 2024 3) "Acknowledging Your Patient's Gender Identity: Why it Matters" - March 12,2024 4) "The Use of NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) in the Treatment of Substance Use, NSSI and More and Opioid Use Disorder Treatment in the Age of Fentanyl: Challenges and Opportunities" - June 1, 2024 5) "Minimizing Risk When Treating Depressed and Suicidal Patients" - July 29, 2024 6) "Dreams and Dreamwork and Quilting as Group Therapy" - September 19, 2024 7) "Feeling the Heat? Our Changing Climate and the Impacts on Our Health and The Mental Health Effects of Mass Shootings" - December 11, 2024 B) The Oklahoma Psychiatric Physicians Association also hosted its Annual Business and Membership meeting at the Doubletree Hotel-Warren Place, Tulsa on Saturday, April 20, 2024. This meeting included a legislative update, presentation of student awards, recognition of member advancements and installation of 2024-2025 officers and councilors. |
