“Stevens county car care began its journey of providing affordable spay/neuter for the cats of low income families in 2007. Stevens county ranks in the bottom third of washington counties by income. Sccc offers low cost and often free spay/neuters for cats of those who cannot afford our services. The group of approximatley 35- to 40 volunteers, 2 to 4 licensed veterinary techs and anywhere from 3 to 7 veterinarians gather together on a sunday in a local community center to fix as many as 227 cats in one long day. Sccc asks the public to pay 35.00, which is close to what the surgeries actually cost us. Acutal cost in 2024 was 37.19 per cat. We loan out live traps to catch "community- and feral cats, which are altered, vaccinated and ear tipped for any donation offered. Our mom & kitten special is our most popular money saver for the low income public. The mother cat is spayed for free and her entire litter of kittens is altered for half price, providing the mother and her whole letter are brough in together at the same clinic. While sccc subsidizes the mom/kitten program, in the long run this avoids those kittens having kittens that come to our clinics at a later date. 300 cats were subsidized to some extent in 2024, totaling 7104. These represented hardship cases, sometimes at no charge at all: ferals and mom & kittes. We depend totally on donations to support the difference between charges and actual costs. Sccc receives no government funds from any jurisdiction. Only the licensed professionals, veterinarians and vet techs, are paid. All other support staff are volunteers and costs are cut in every area possible way, while still maintaining high quality standars. We stretch every dollar until it begs for mercy - keeping costs to a minimum. Our little group of cat enthusiasts altered 684 cats in 2024 bringing the total to 21,027 since inception.”
