Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The Executive Director, bookeeper and Finance Committee review the Form 990 before it is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

The nominating and governance committee of the Board of Directors interviews potential Board Members and asks about potential conflicts of interest. The current Board Chair inquires about potential conflicts of interest at each monthly board meeting. The nominating and governance committee of the Board of Directors periodically reviews the conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The Executive Committee conducts an annual evaluation with the Executive Director (currently the only paid CEO/ED/Top Management Official/Officer/Key Employee). The Board uses a two-part assessment form, one part for the ED to complete and the second part for the Executive Committee to collectively respond. The results are discussed together and summarized. The Board uses the results of the annual evaluation and the then-current Executive Director round table ED pay statistics to determine the compensation package for the ED.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Part V, Line 4: Further the charitable purposes of the Foundation.Sonoma Valley Education Foundation adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely-than-not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. Sonoma Valley Education Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the Internal Revenue Service and all state jurisdictions where it operates. Sonoma Valley Education Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on Sonoma Valley Education Foundations financial condition, results of operations or cashflows. Accordingly, Sonoma Valley Education Foundation has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain tax positions at June 30, 2019. Sonoma Valley Education Foundation is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress.

IRS990/Desc0Preschool for ALL - Children ages 3-5 participate in high quality preschool programs located in three district elementary school sites. With 64% of District students coming from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, preschool is a luxury that is not afforded by all, but the benefits of preschool are universally acknowledged. By allowing students to experience an educational setting prior to entering kindergarten, preschool sets students up for success through early exposure to organized play, academic language, math concepts and social emotional support. As kindergarten standards and expectations have increased over the years, preschool has become critical to students future success.Summer Literacy Academy - Reading proficiently by the end of third grade is a priority focus area for SVUSD. Up to third grade, students generally learn to read; after third grade, they read to learn. The Summer Literacy Academy supports this crucial indicator of future school success by providing an intensive summer literacy intervention program for students in grades K-3 who are below grade level and at risk of falling farther behind. For 20 days, students meet in small group lessons and receive concentrated reading intervention using evidence-based curriculum and a variety of texts including poetry, chapter books, songs and picture books. Freshmen Team - Freshmen Teams are designed to ease the transition to high school, improve attendance, decrease discipline incidents, increase academic success, and increase student engagement and satisfaction. This is accomplished by providing a common prep period for Freshmen Team teachers to collaborate, plan engaging activities and field trips, and organize intervention and support for struggling students. Students are placed on one of three teams with the intention that students have the same teachers for English, Math, Science and PE. School year activities for Freshmen include: Freshmen Seminar, parent conference nights, relevant field trips, monthly newsletters to freshmen families, academic intervention and college and career awareness activities.Engineering, Design and Technology Academy (EDT Academy)- Sonoma Valley High Schools Engineering, Design & Technology (EDT) Academy, certified by the National Academy Foundation, provides the opportunity for students to engage in small learning groups and problem-solving exercises within the framework of a career-related field. Students complete a rigorous, nationally-acclaimed engineering curriculum while gaining exposure to industry professionals and applying their coursework in real-life situations through guest speakers, work-site tours, job shadows, internships and other work-based learning activities. EDT Students work in a state-of-the-art maker lab outfitted with industry-standard equipment, allowing students to become skilled in the use of 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D carvers and associated software programs.Middle School Writing Centers - Inspired by 826 Valencia in San Francisco, the Writing Centers at Adele Harrison and Altimira Middle School provide a place for students to develop their technical and creative writing skills. Students learn writing strategies, academic language and receive help in planning, drafting, and revising writing assignments and projects. Small group work allows teachers and coaches to give more individualized support to students, sparking their imagination and increasing their writing skills and capacity. The year culminates in the publication of an anthology for each school including a variety of student work.Valley Vibes Orchestra(ViVO)- An El Sistema Based Orchestra Program - The Valley Vibes Youth Orchestra (ViVO) provides students with the opportunity to participate in an El Sistema based youth-development orchestral music program with a mission to change lives through music. Students receive intense daily after-school music instruction, developing not only music mastery but also cognitive and social-emotion
