Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The Executive Director, bookeeper and Finance Committee review the Form 990 before it is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

The nominating and governance committee of the Board of Directors interviews potential Board Members and asks about potential conflicts of interest. The current Board Chair inquires about potential conflicts of interest at each monthly board meeting. The nominating and governance committee of the Board of Directors periodically reviews the conflict of interest policy.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The Executive Committee conducts an annual evaluation with the Executive Director (currently the only paid CEO/ED/Top Management Official/Officer/Key Employee). The Board uses a two-part assessment form, one part for the ED to complete and the second part for the Executive Committee to collectively respond. The results are discussed together and summarized. The Board uses the results of the annual evaluation and the then-current Executive Director round table ED pay statistics to determine the compensation package for the ED.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15B: Compensation Review and Approval Process for Officers and Key Employees

The Board uses a two-part assessment form, one part for the ED to complete and the second part for the Executive Committee to collectively respond. The results are discussed together and summarized. Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Part V, Line 4: Further the charitable purposes of the Foundation.Sonoma Valley Education Foundation adopted the recognition requirements for uncertain income tax positions as required by generally accepted accounting principles, with no cumulative effect adjustment required. Income tax benefits are recognized for income tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, only when it is determined that the income tax position will more-likely-than-not be sustained upon examination by taxing authorities. Sonoma Valley Education Foundation has analyzed tax positions taken for filing with the Internal Revenue Service and all state jurisdictions where it operates. Sonoma Valley Education Foundation believes that income tax filing positions will be sustained upon examination and does not anticipate any adjustments that would result in a material adverse effect on Sonoma Valley Education Foundations financial condition, results of operations or cashflows. Accordingly, Sonoma Valley Education Foundation has not recorded any reserves, or related accruals for interest and penalties for uncertain tax positions at June 30, 2018. Sonoma Valley Education Foundation is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress.

IRS990/Desc0Early Childhood Literacy ADVANCE Parent-Child Education - ADVANCE offers low-income Spanish-speaking parents of children ages 0-3 parent education on their role as their child's first teacher. Lessons include learning through play, school skill, discipline, nutrition and much more. The children participate in pre-literacy and school readiness activities in separate classrooms. Additional community resources are also available for the parents to support their family needs.Preschool for ALL - Preschool for ALL provides a high-quality learning environment for children ages 3-5 to learn the social and academic skills necessary to be successful students: how to listen well, share, participate, compromise, be respectful to others, and problem solve. Children who receive this high-quality preschool education also enter kindergarten with pre-reading skills, rich vocabularies, and strong basic math skills. The program also supports parental involvement.Summer Literacy Academy Jump into Reading! - Jump into Reading! is an intensive summer intervention program designed to improve reading skills for Transitional Kindergarten (TK)to 2nd grade students. Students who are more than two years below grade level participate in this summer program focused on developing critical foundational reading skills of phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency. Once students have mastered these skills, they move on to vocabulary development and reading comprehension.Summer Reading & Writing Academy - The summer intervention program provides support for students exiting grades 1-3 who are below grade level proficiency in reading skills. SRWA was implemented as a response to the reality that many students slip further behind in their reading and writing skills during summer months if there is no intervention. SRWA provides professional development for teachers with the opportunity for teachers to practice the strategies in a real-time setting in the academy.Grade Level Proficiency Project - The Grade Level Proficiency Project is an innovative program that uses a combination of game-like computer software and classroom coaching for teachers to bring elementary students to grade level proficiency in match and literacy skills. The program provides individually paced learning addressing the individual needs of the students. The project also includes a professional development model that includes real time, in class teaching and coaching educators. This program is a direct response to the paradigm shift in education today, using technology to help guide teacher instruction and engage all students.
