The West Palm Beach Library Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is independent from the City of West Palm Beach, was formed to support the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach. The Foundation, free of any political influence, secures financial and in-kind donations to support and enhance programs, services, collections, and technology that the city's reasonable operating budget cannot encompass. We work with the Library in a strong partnership, to determine where private support can have the greatest impact and at the same time, not replace the public's responsibility for funding the basic operations of a strong library.
The West Palm Beach Library Foundation raises funds for the Mandel Public Library to create and expand FREE community programs, enhance services and grow its collections. Gifts to the foundation support vital and valued programs that allow our childen to excel and help adults to thrive. Popular programs funded by the foundation that benefit and enrich the communiy include after school homework centers, summer programs, teen mentoring, job readiness as well as cultural, education and recreational events and programs.This past year the Mandel Public Library had over 109,168 library card holders who made 421,369 visits to the Library, 755,021 books, CDs, and DVDs were checked out, the 150 public computers were used 153,136 times, and 79,765 people attended one of the over 2,500 free programs.

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Afterschool Homework CenterHomework Centers are the anchor of the library's after-school initiatives and serve as a lifeline for children and teens by providing free academic support to students grades K-12. Elementary and Teen Homework Centers are open four days a week and on Sunday provide everything students need to successfully study, learn and complete homework and research projects. Equipped with basic supplies like paper and pencils, laptops, printers, databases and the latest technologies, Homework Centers offer educational games, software and tools and are stocked with healthy snacks to feed bodies and minds. Most importantly Elementary and Teen Homework Centers are staffed teachers certified by the School District of Palm Beach County and professional librarians, as well as volunteers and AmeriCorps members. These adults serve as teachers, advocates, mentors and cheerleaders for children and teens on their educational journeys. Less than one-third of kindergarten-aged children who live in West Palm Beach, specifically those in the public elementary schools that are nearest the library, arrive in their classrooms ready to learn. These numbers improve only slightly when students are tested for grade level reading in third grade, where 40% of children are proficient readers. Research shows that children who have not mastered reading by 3rd grade are less likely to graduate. Adults without high school diplomas make less than their peers who graduated high school, for many a diploma is the difference between poverty and a living wage. To help address these needs and partner with children and families on their educational journeys and build a stronger community, Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach created Homework Centers. |

IncreMental-U encompasses a breadth of programming including academic lectures conducted by university professors, exhibitions, civic engagement panel discussions, audience performance classes, professional music performances, an aspiring author series, and hands on art classes. Since its launch in 2014, over 31,000 adults have attended over 500 increMental-U programs to learn, develop new skills, expand their relational networks and enrich their lives. IncreMental-U programming creates opportunities for seniors to stay independent by providing mental stimulation, it allows the arts and culture to flourish among people who have the time to dedicate to a newly learned art form, and it combines, under one roof, academic lectures, hands on arts, performance arts, performances, panel discussions, and more each week. IncreMental-U programming provides a place and platform for people to connect to new ideas, experiences and to one another. The volume, variety, breadth and depth of offerings is unprecedented in the county. |

In the neighborhoods just north of the library, 65% of children live in poverty. Over 90% of children in the schools nearest the library qualify for free and reduced lunches. Every summer children and teens enter the library hungry for attention, hungry to learn, and often just hungry. The librarians at Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach have seen these needs for years and work diligently to create programming that meets each of these basic needs. Through interactive, hands-on learning activities, a Summer Reading Program and Summer Academy, the children's library team works to feed children's bodies and minds. However, due to staffing and budget realities, the library alone could not offer food and fun learning opportunities when children arrived hungry and looking for something for engagement. Last summer through a partnership with USDA Summer Food Service Program and Palm Beach County Schools, the library was able to feed children's bodies and minds on a large scale for the first time and it was a huge success! Over the summer 9,380 children and teens ate nutritious lunches or snacks in the library's Summer Break Spot. Reaction from the community was overwhelmingly positive with parents and children thanking the library for providing this service. The initiative was so impactful that families still come into the library months later to ask if we are serving lunch. In addition to the regularly scheduled library programming, librarians recruited volunteers to read to children and families during lunch time. At the library's Summer Break Spot, children and families from different social, religious and economic backgrounds ate, listened to stories, and talked with one another. One volunteer expressed that, for her, the most rewarding part of participating in Summer Break Spot was watching so many different children and families get to know one another and connect over shared experiences.In addition to providing almost 10,000 healthy lunches and snacks last summer, the percent of children that checked in reading in the Library's Summer Reading Program went up 11% over the previous summer. The children's library team attributes this to being a Summer Break Spot site. By providing healthy meals and snacks the library was able to remove one of the largest barriers that keeps children from learning and growing over the summer and play a larger role in helping children enter the next school year ready to learn! |
