“Other program services 4: homework centers are the anchor of the librarys afterschool initiatives and provide free academic support to students grades k-12. Childrens and teen homework centers provide everything from paper and pencils to laptops and assistance from certified teachers. Equipped with the latest technologies, homework centers offers learning games, software and tools and is stocked with healthy snacks. Last school year 2,173 elementary children received assistance with homework and projects, ate healthy snacks and worked with caring adults who cheered them on and challenged them in their educational journey. That same year, 1,105 middle and high school students found assistance with projects, test prep, and homework. In 2016 all of the high school seniors who regularly attended teen homework center celebrated high school graduations and college acceptances. Other program services 5: let's reada volunteer-based literacy program which improves the reading skills of children. Volunteers trained in the art of reading aloud bring storytimes to four academically struggling schools. This results in children developing stronger reading skills and a love for books. Three times during the academic year each child receives a gift book to build their own home library. Annually 40 volunteers read to over 1,800 students during 575 classroom visits. Children served through this program develop a lifelong relationship with the value of the printed word and reading as an enjoyable experience. Other program services 6: other program services 7: summer academy provides a safe, easily accessible learning environment enabling children to maintain and build their skills in reading, writing, science, and math. Designed to help minimize or reverse the summer slide for low income elementary age children. Conducted by two certified teachers, the instruction is tailored to each grade level. One key component that sets the summer academy apart from other summer learning programs is that breakfast and lunch are provided. Offering meals creates an incentive to attend the programs and the energy needed to fully engage in the learning process. Other program services 8: summer readingeach week during june and july teen, elementary and preschool children who complete a reading log and achieve their reading goals self-select a book to take home to start their own personal libraries. Having a home filled with great books helps develop and sustain stronger reading skills, but more importantly, cultivates a love of reading. Gift books are chosen from the best in childrens literature. Last summer 7,200 books were given away including titles such as caps for sale, a pocket for corduroy, flat stanley, if you give a mouse a cookie, junie b jones, little bear, magic tree house series, bad kitty, captain underpants, charlotte's web, james and the giant peach, diary of a wimpy kid, harry potter books, percy jackson and the olympians, the phantom tollbooth, and theodore boone kid detective animal farm, fahrenheit 451, and 1984. Other program services 9: other program services 10: teen mentoringdesigned to build self-esteem and provide teens with the confidence and motivation to be successful in life. Tsb brings teens to the mandel public library of wpb, a safe haven, where they can receive homework help, get advice on life challenges, make friends with similar interests, and receive assistance with job readiness, ged and college preparedness. Tsb will reach out to at-risk teens, helping them gain the positive skills needed to become outstanding, responsible citizens through a variety of activities designed with their needs in mind such as workshops arts & crafts, poetry slams, and group technology projects.”
