IRS990/Desc0PETSCRIPTION: THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY TO HELP SICK AND DISABLED PATIENTS OF ALL AGES REACH THERAPEUTIC GOALS. THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND CREATES A RELATIONSHIP FREE OF THE STRESS OF JUDGMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS. ANIMALS ACCEPT HUMANS WITHOUT CONDITIONS, AND DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE PRESENCE OF ILLNESS, DEFORMITY OR DISABILITY. FOR PATIENTS IN PAIN, ANIMALS CAN BE A CALMING AND MOTIVATING FORCE. SPEECH, OCCUPATIONAL, AND PHYSICAL THERAPISTS REPORT THAT PATIENTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO RESPOND POSITIVELY TO REHABILITATION WHEN AN ANIMAL IS USED AS A THERAPEUTIC TOOL. EACH ACTIVITY IS GOAL-ORIENTED WITH A SPECIFIC END IN MIND, SUCH AS IMPROVEMENT OF MOVEMENT, VERBAL SKILLS, OR ATTENTION SPAN, AND DETAILS OF EACH SESSION ARE DOCUMENTED TO TRACK PROGRESS. THERAPY TEAMS WORK WITH THERAPISTS TO HELP PATIENTS LEARN TO GRASP, STAND, WALK, OR SPEAK, OR THEY MAY SIMPLY PROVIDE NEEDED DISTRACTION FROM PAIN AND FEAR. WHEN A CHILD STRUGGLING TO WALK TAKES HIS FIRST STEPS ALONGSIDE A THERAPY DOG, THE SESSION SEEMS LESS LIKE WORK AND MORE LIKE PLAY. WHEN A CANCER PATIENT KNOWS THAT A THERAPY ANIMAL IS BY HER SIDE, SHE IS MORE LIKELY TO AWAKEN FROM ANESTHESIA SOONER, MAKING TREATMENTS SAFER, LESS STRESSFUL, AND MORE EFFECTIVE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PAWSITIVE LIVING: HAND-IN-PAW HAS DELIEVERED ITS 12-WEEK PAWSITIVE LIVING PROGRAM TO AT-RISK TEENS AND PRETEENS FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS. DESIGNED TO FOSTER DISCUSSIONS AND ENCOURAGE PARTICIPANTS TO EXPRESS EMOTIONS IN A HEALTH WAY, ITS EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULUM INCLUDES ENGAGING ACTIVITIES THAT TEACH EMPATHY, ANGER MANAGEMENT, AND SAFTEY. AS DEMAND STEADILY GREW, THE ORGANIZATION SAW A NEED TO TARGET A YOUNGER POPULATION AS WELL. IN 2012, HAND-IN-PAW PURCHASED THE NO MORE BULLIES! CURRICULUM AND BEGAN DELIVERING IT IN 6-WEEK TERMS TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN. IN BOTH PROGRAMS, HIGHLY QUALIFIED FACILITATORS LEAD GROUPS OF THERAPY TEAMS IN TEACHING YOUTH TO CULTIVATE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING SKILLS. THE ANIMALS SERVE AS A BRIDGE OF COMMUNICATION TO THE PARTICIPANTS, HELPING TO QUICKLY BUILD RAPPORT WITH CHILDREN WHO MAY HAVE DEVELOPED HARDENED FACADES DUE TO ABUSE OR OTHER DIFFICULT EXPERIENCES. YOUTH ASSIST WITH TRAINING ANIMALS AND IN DOING SO LEARN TO MODIFY THEIR OWN BEHAVIOR. THROUGH EACH WEEK'S INTERACTIVE GROUP SESSIONS, YOUTH FORGE BONDS THAT INSTILL COMPASSION, AND RESPECT, AND FOSTER RESPONSIBILITY. WORKING WITH SUPPORTIVE VOLUNTEERS AND ANIMALS THAT OFFER UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE HELPS PARTICIPANTS PROCESS AND EXPRESS FEELINGS AND ENHANCES SELF-ESTEEM AND PERSONAL EMPOWERMENT. BOTH PROGRAMS INCLUDE SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS, FIELD TRIPS AND WEEKLY JOURNALING COMPONENTS.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SIT, STAY READ!: IN COLLABORATION WITH STAFF AT SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, MEDICAL CENTERS, AND SHELTERS, RELUCTANT READERS AGES 5-12 ARE PAIRED WITH HAND-IN-PAWS THERAPY TEAMS TO MAKE READING A FUN, NON-THREATENING, AND POSITIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE. EACH CHILD READS ALOUD TO HIS OR HER ANIMAL (AND THE ANIMALS HANDLER), ONE-ON-ONE FOR 20-30 MINUTES. FREQUENCY AND PROGRAM LENGTH VARIES BY FACILITY, WITH SESSIONS MOST OFTEN HELD WEEKLY IN BLOCKS OF EIGHT WEEKS OR LONGER. RESEARCH INDICATES THAT CHILDREN WITH LOW SELF-ESTEEM ARE OFTEN MORE WILLING TO INTERACT WITH AN ANIMAL THAN WITH A PERSON. DURING SUCH INTERACTIONS THEY ARE INCLINED TO FORGET ABOUT THEIR LIMITATIONS. ON DAY ONE, CHILDREN ARE GIVEN A READING JOURNAL THAT CONTAINS GET-TO-KNOW-YOU QUESTIONS DESIGNED TO BUILD RAPPORT. THE JOURNALS ARE THEN USED THROUGHOUT THE TERM TO TRACK THE NUMBER OF PAGES READ AND TO RECORD INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT BOOKS THE CHILDREN ENJOY MOST. THE PARTICIPATING CHILDREN READ AGE-APPROPRIATE BOOKS WITH ANIMAL THEMES, SOME OF WHICH OUR VOLUNTEERS GIVE THEM TO KEEP. TEACHERS REPORT AN INCREASE IN SELF-CONFIDENCE AND CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION, AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AS A RESULT.
