Additional Explanations

Form 990, Page 1, Part I, Line 6

The foundation's board of directors is made up of all volunteers. The major fund-raising events each year are also supported and staffed by volunteers.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Emergency department patients with cardiovascular and gastrointestinal complaints requiring immediate point of care diagnostics will benefit from a foundation grant to purchase a new state of the art ultrasound system with a cost of almost 48,000. Allowing the physicians to perform quick, bedside studies on these patients takes only a fraction of the time it would take to call in ancillary departments to do the tests. The cardiac rehab department received an 83,005 grant from the foundation to purchase a cardiopulmonary rehab patient monitoring system which includes integrated monitoring, program management and outcomes modules. Each of the two workstations has a 16 channel capacity. Prior to receiving a 30,000 grant from the foundation to purchase minimally invasive heart valve instruments, the cardiovascular surgeons had to take their patients to other facilities when certain procedures were called for. The instruments are used for right thoracotomy approach for mitral and aortic valve repairs or replacements. The procedure is done through a small incision beneath the breast instead of the normal midline sternotomy incision. The minimally invasive procedure is safer for patients, results in less post-operative pain and a smaller scar. The foundation provided just under 19,000 for the purchase of a verathon glide scope for the emergency department. This special intubation tool has a fiber optic camera in the tip of the unit that transmits a video image of the patient's airway to a digital monitor. This enables the physician to clearly view the airway opening and to guide the tube precisely where it needs to be, even in the most difficult cases. During the fiscal year ended 03/31/2016 the pediatrics department received over 18,000 to make various equipment purchases. This includes 10,000 used to purchase halo sleepsacks which are wearable blankets that replace loose blankets in the crib that can cover a baby's face and interfere with breathing. This year the employee assistance fund granted 5,990 to employees facing unexpected or extraordinary financial circumstances.

IRS990/Desc0THOMAS HOSPITAL FOUNDATION PROVIDED ALMOST 415,000 TO THOMAS HOSPITAL DURING THE YEAR ENDED MARCH 31, 2016 TO PURCHASE SPECIFIC HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT AND SUPPORT HOSPITAL ACTIVITIES. THE FOUNDATION AWARDED A GRANT OF 149,200 TO THE HOSPITAL TO PURCHASE A NEW GE CARDIO LAB ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY MONITORING SYSTEM TO REPLACE THE SYSTEM THAT WAS CURRENTLY IN USE. THIS UPDATED SYSTEM IS AN IMPORTANT ADDITION TO THE HOSPITAL'S ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY LAB TO MEASURE, MONITOR, RECORD, PACE AND INTEGRATE 3D MAPPING OF THE INSIDE OF PATIENTS' HEARTS. THIS ALLOWS THE PHYSICIAN TO SAFELY PERFORM ABLATION PROCEDURES TO CORRECT CERTAIN ABNORMAL HEART RHYTHMS. MORE THAN 140 PATIENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BENEFIT FROM THESE PROCEDURES ANNUALLY. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O.) EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PATIENTS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR AND GASTROINTESTINAL COMPLAINTS REQUIRING IMMEDIATE POINT OF CARE DIAGNOSTICS WILL BENEFIT FROM A FOUNDATION GRANT TO PURCHASE A NEW STATE OF THE ART ULTRASOUND SYSTEM WITH A COST OF ALMOST 48,000.
