Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

Selected members of the Board of Directors review a draft of the 990. Typically, the Chief Business Officer will then present a report to the full Board of Directors at the next scheduled meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15A

The Board periodically performs a market survey to determine comparable salaries for the CEO position. They also establish a list of performance indicators for the coming year that will assist in determining any increase for that year. The CEO sets other management position compensation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The Organization makes its Form 990 available to the public through the website guidestar.com. The Organization's governing documents, etc. are available upon request.

IRS990/Desc0Summer day and residential camp sessions provide a safe place for children and youth during out of school time-outdoors where they are completely "unplugged". Daily experiences at camp provide the campers with experiential learning and physical activity which is critical to addressing health concerns such as childhood obesity and ADHD. Campers spend their days hiking, canoeing, swimming, doing archery and riflery, and learning new outdoor skills. Exposed to new personalities, campers make new friends and learn to work together as a team. They grow in independence and self-confidence and develop personal and social skills they will need to be successful as adults.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In Outdoor Education, students travel from school to the outdoor classrooms and learning stations at camp where an interdisciplinary approach is utilized to encourage students to become ecologically literate. Outdoor academics allows many students to be successful in ways the structure of a school may not permit. Curriculum aligns with the Alabama Course of Study and promotes appreciation for our natural surroundings, teaching the concepts of sustainability and the interdependency of all living things.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Youth Empowerment is comprised of In-School programs offered in school classrooms during in-school hours. These programs requested by teachers & counselors provide non-academic, social & emotional learnings now required in the Alabama Course of Study. Career Education teaches students where their aptitude and interests intersect, the jobs and professions consistent with that intersection, & the educational requirements for students to be employable in their chosen field. Links-Up Mentoring offers weekly small mentoring groups for students showing the early warning signs of being at risk. Students are taught to be self-aware and how to manage their emotions & behaviors. In a small supportive peer group, they learn to communicate in healthy and productive ways. The Outside-In Program teaches character and fosters a more accepting and compassionate school culture. Delivery options are a full day program, an assembly program or five 30 minute classroom lessons. The Self-Reliance Programs teach students to be self-sufficient and safe when home alone or when an adult is not present. The program is a compilation of four different courses progressive in nature, serving grades K - 5. Each course is delivered once a week for 6 weeks.
