“One parish one prisoner (and other forms of church relationship bridging) a core part of 2018 was the pilot run opop with our 3 churches, partnered with our 4 incarcerated participants. These efforts included: coordinating trainings in churches and inside monroe correctional complex, monthly meetings with three church small groups, fostering their letter writing, reentry planning-from work release to immigration detention to church services, from meals together through drug relapse and the rupture and repair of relationships. We developed lessons from the successes and failures of these pilot runs into our next and larger round of 8 new applicants with 8 new churches.”
“Deep chaplaincy: prison letters: we deepened relationships of trust, friendship, and pastoral care with 64 gang-affected men in prison (most wa state), some in solitary confinement. Prisoner reentry: direct reentry accompaniment: we focused our time- intensive work around accompanying 11 gang-affected men through their release process from prison and into stable lives in skagit, king, snohomish, and whatcom counties. Partnerships underground coffee: two men in our program gained full-time employment with benefits at underground coffee, owned and operated now by fidalgo coffee roasters in burlington, wa. Uc began a rebranding campaign, renewing its website, language, bagging, and opening new markets in seattle area grocers underground employment network: we worked with fidalgo coffee roasters leadership to design and inspire a wider felony-friendly employment network model in the skagit valley, but put this on pause to focus on the rebranding underground writing: one of our co-directors co-founded underground writing, a separate arts nonprofit in the skagit valley, running creative writing workshops in juvenile hall and the local jail. He continues leading monthly workshops in these venues, speaking on their podcast and at public events, as amplifying these voices in the arts work fulfills underground ministries' mission of opening new relationships between the incarcerated and their communities for mutual change. Storytelling our co-directors, usually accompanied by formerly incarcerated men in our program, speaking in churches, adding to our growing network of partnering church communities, breaking down fear and other invisible barriers between families and men wanting to start new and productive lives with community support. We maintained relationship with 26 churches through such visits, promoting underground coffee, phone and lunch appointments with pastors and congregants. We recorded video trainings with crossroads prison ministries in grand rapids, mi, as their national network was inspired by our relational focus on prisoner reentry and sought to train volunteers nationwide online in how to shift from correcting stock bible study pamphlets/tests to building relationships with incarcerated people through letters. We send monthly newsletters to growing email list of 700 homes. These stories included the direct writings of 3 different men in prison, and stories of 5 different men in their reentry process.”

UC BEGAN A REBRANDING CAMPAIGN, RENEWING ITS WEBSITE, LANGUAGE, BAGGING, AND OPENING NEW MARKETS IN SEATTLE AREA GROCERS UNDERGROUND EMPLOYMENT NETWORK: WE WORKED WITH FIDALGO COFFEE ROASTERS LEADERSHIP TO DESIGN AND INSPIRE A WIDER FELONY-FRIENDLY EMPLOYMENT NETWORK MODEL IN THE SKAGIT VALLEY, BUT PUT THIS ON PAUSE TO FOCUS ON THE REBRANDING UNDERGROUND WRITING: ONE OF OUR CO-DIRECTORS CO-FOUNDED UNDERGROUND WRITING, A SEPARATE ARTS NONPROFIT IN THE SKAGIT VALLEY, RUNNING CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS IN JUVENILE HALL AND THE LOCAL JAIL.
