Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 9:

Transfer out to the schenectady foundation -108,332.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 2C:

There has been no change in the process for reviewing audited financial statements or the selection of an independent auditor.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The schenectady foundation and its affiliate are not-for-profit entities and are exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. The foundation and affiliate have been classified by the internal revenue service as entities that are not private foundations and qualify for the charitable contribution deduction. The organization is not subject to income taxes on income received for exempt purposes. No provision for income taxes has been made in the consolidated financial statements. The organization follows statutory requirements for income tax accounting and avoids risks with tax positions that may be challenged upon examination. Management believes the liability from taxing authority examination, if any, would not have a material effect on the organization's consolidated financial statements.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0STRATEGIC INITIATIVES:THE SCHENECTADY FOUNDATION'S COMMUNITY PRIORITIES AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES ARE CARRIED OUT THROUGH THE WORK OF THE SCHENECTADY FOUNDATION, INC. NEW PRIORITIES ARE ADOPTED FROM TIME TO TIME BY THE FOUNDATION. IN 2020 THE FOUNDATION'S INITIATIVES INCLUDED: 1) FOOD SECURITY: WEEKEND BACKPACK PROGRAM ENSURES THAT MORE THAN 1,000 FOOD INSECURE CHILDREN IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT SCHENECTADY COUNTY RECEIVE A WEEKEND SUPPLY OF FOOD EACH FRIDAY. WEEKEND BACKPACK PARTNERS INCLUDE CITY MISSION OF SCHENECTADY, REGIONAL FOOD BANK OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK, MVP HEALTH CARE, SEFCU AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS THROUGHOUT SCHENECTADY COUNTY. DURING 2020, THERE WERE 578 STUDENTS SERVED).THE THRIVING NEIGHBORHOODS CHALLENGE WAS LAUNCHED IN 2018 - AN EFFORT TO SUPPORT NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS AND CITIZENS TO COME UP WITH THEIR IDEAS FOR IMPROVING THEIR COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD, AND THEN TO IMPLEMENT A PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH THEIR GOALS. TWELVE PROJECTS WERE AWARDED A TOTAL OF $250,000 BY THE FOUNDATION, FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN 2019. PROJECTS RANGED FROM PUBLIC ART, TO CONSTRUCTING A SPRAY PAD IN A PUBLIC PARK, TO NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP AND ANTI-LITTER CAMPAIGNS, TO CREATING A BRAND AND BUILDING NEIGHBORHOOD PRIDE. A SECOND ROUND OF THE CHALLENGE WAS INITIATED IN 2019 FOR IMPLEMENTATION IN 2020. IMPLEMENTATION WAS STALLED IN 2020 BY THE PANDEMIC. VARIOUS COMMUNITY GROUPS AND NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS PARTICIPATED INVOLVING ABOUT 100 PEOPLE AND SERVING APPROXIMATELY 65,000 IN THE CITY OF SCHENECTADY.COVID 19 PANDEMIC RESPONSE AND RECOVERY: IN MARCH 2020, AS THE THREAT OF THE COVID 19 PANDEMIC EMERGED, THE FOUNDATION ORGANIZED A COALITION OF NON-PROFIT AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO COORDINATE EFFORTS TO KEEP PEOPLE HEALTHY AND SAFE. MORE THAN TWO DOZEN AGENCIES JOINED THE COALITION AND PROVIDED SERVICES INCLUDING DELIVERIES OF FOOD AND SUPPLIES TO PEOPLE MOST AT RISK OF HARM, INCLUDING THE ELDERLY, UNEMPLOYED, DISABLED, THOSE LACKING MOBILITY OR THE RESOURCES TO CARE FOR THEMSELVES. THE FOUNDATION FUNDED MANY OF THESE SERVICES WITH GRANTS THROUGH ITS REBUILDING FAMILIES FUND, AND RECEIVED DONATIONS FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ASSIST IN THE RESPONSE EFFORT. OVER A FIFTEEN WEEK PERIOD, THE COALITION ESTABLISHED A CALL CENTER THAT RECEIVED NEARLY 30,000 CALLS FOR HELP, MADE 16,500 DELIVERIES OF FOOD AND SUPPLIES INCLUDING PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT, PROVIDED CHILD CARE FOR CHILDREN OF ESSENTIAL WORKERS, DISTRIBUTED 60,000 PREPARED MEALS, AND ASSISTED 140 FAMILIES WITH RENT AND UTILITIES. THE INITIATIVE CALLED "ONE SCHENECTADY" WAS FORMED TO CONTINUE ASSISTING COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS COVID DECLINED IN THE SUMMER AND FALL, INCLUDING HELPING PEOPLE FIND EMPLOYMENT, CREATING A CHILD CARE FUND TO HELP CHILD CARE PROVIDERS TO RE-OPEN SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY, CONTINUING TO HELP PAY FOR CHILDCARE, RENT AND UTILITIES FOR NEEDY COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND CONTINUING FOOD DELIVERY TO HOUSEHOLDS MOST AT-RISK. THIS PROCESS INVOLVED OVER 350 VOLUNTEERS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR AND SERVED THE ENITRE COUNTY OF 150,000 RESIDENTS.2020 CENSUS: THE FOUNDATION FORMED A COALITION OF ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ADDRESS CONCERNS OF A LOW CENSUS COUNT IN THE CITY OF SCHENECTADY THAT COULD RESULT IN LOST FUNDING TO OUR MOST DISTRESSED NEIGHBORHOODS AND FAMILIES. THE COALITION CONDUCTED OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATION EFFORTS TO URGE RESIDENTS TO COMPLETE THEIR CENSUS. THE OUTREACH PROGRAM INCLUDED PRODUCTION OF A VIDEO SERIES USING COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERS TO HELP OVERCOME BARRIERS TO COMPLETION OF THE CENSUS.BRIDGE THE GAP: WITH MOST SCHENECTADY STUDENTS REQUIRED TO LEARN VIRTUALLY DUE TO BUDGET CUTS AT THE SCHENECTADY CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE FOUNDION ORGANIZED AND FUNDED AN INITIATIVE CALLED "BRIDGE THE GAP". BRIDGE THE GAP SOUGHT TO REDUCE THE HARM FROM THE IMPACT OF SCHOOL CLOSURES BY ALIGNING COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY RESOURCES, PROVIDING SAFE SPACES FOR STUDENTS TO CONGREGATE, LEARN, AND PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORTED THEIR ACADEMIC ADVANCEMENT A
