Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1

The Executive Committee is comprised of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Board. It also includes the Executive Director as an ad hoc member. The committee oversees the management of the organization, except for the power to amend the articles of incorporation and bylaws, has the powers and authority of the Board of Directors in the intervals between meetings of the Board, and is subject to the direction and control of the full Board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

Form 990 is prepared by an independent CPA firm and reviewed in detail by the organization's top management. The reviewed Form 990 is then provided to the Board of directors prior to filing with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The organization requires all officers and board members to annually complete and sign a conflict of interest statements. The President of the organization is responsible for reviewing the signed statements and ensuring that interested persons are in compliance with the conflict of interest policy. Should any potential conflicts of interest be disclosed, the board member or officer would be asked to refrain from participation in any deliberation decision with regard to matters affected by the relationship, and the board would seek to replace the individual in an orderly manner if the conflict could not be cleared to the board's satisfaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

Line 15a) The independent Board of Directors reviewed and approved the Executive Director's salary and used comparability data. This process and decision is documented in the Board minutes. Line 15b) The independent Board of Directors reviewed and approved the President's salary and used comparability data. This process and decision is documented in the Board minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and audited financial statements available to the public upon request and also makes their conflict of interest policy and audited financial statements available to the public on their website.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C:

The Board's Audit Committee assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of its independent accountant. This process has not changed since the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the consolidated financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the consolidated statement of activities. As of December 31, 2016 and 2015, the Organization had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements. Amigos for Christ (AFC) files information tax returns in the U.S. and various state jurisdictions. AFC is generally no longer subject to U.S. federal and state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2013.

IRS990/Desc0HEALTH: Each year, we work to reduce the cases of intestinal parasites, kidney disease, and respiratory disease by ten percent. To accomplish this goal in 2016, we made 750 home visits with families to discuss habits and disease prevention. Additionally, 244 families attended health classes on disease prevention and 270 people were tested for intestinal parasites. We partnered with rural families to build 22 Clean Air Kitchens that feature a smokeless stove and significantly improve respiratory health. Through a partnership with a local hospital and missionary doctors, we also performed 146 life changing surgeries.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Amigos for Christ exists to serve God. We do this by two approaches. First, we facilitate sustainable, locally-empowered improvements in water, health, education, and economic infrastructure in rural Nicaraguan communities by developing leaders, integrating ourselves into the communities, and providing financial assistance to overcome otherwise impossibly high costs. Second, we host short term missionaries who want to step out in faith and lend a helping hand. Through the life changing experiences that result, both missionaries and impoverished families grow together in faith and richness of life.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0PROJECT SUPPORT: We own, operate and maintain a missions complex in Nicaragua to house visiting mission trip participants. We have close to 2,000 visitors every year. This complex also holds our Nicaraguan headquarters, which includes office space, warehouses, and a fleet of vehicles--all of which are necessary to support our daily operations.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0EDUCATION: Our goal is that 100% of children ages 5 - 17 attend school in the 17 communities we serve. To accomplish this goal in 2016, we served 202,650 meals that served as an incentive for student attendance. We sponsored secondary and university education for 103 students through 22 partnerships with local high schools and national universities. We built 2 new schools serving 158 rural families. 1,079 students attended a class on family and Christian values, and 243 parents participated in gatherings to promote education.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0MISSIONS: In 2016, we were joined by 1,750 short-term missionaries. Our mission trips are designed to create cross-cultural experiences that spark transformational growth for participants and the Nicaraguan families they serve. WATER & SANITATION: In the communities we serve, our goal is that clean water is available 24/7, and that a septic system exists for waste (modern bathroom) in every home. In 2016, 58,000,000 gallons of clean water flowed to 1,193 families. 41 bathrooms were constructed and 121 more homes were connected to a clean water system. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Our work in rural communities is focused on helping families find ways to earn at least $15 a day. In 2016, 222 people attended 8 different trainings to increase farm and animal production and 128 people attended 4 different trainings on financial planning. 315 chickens and 84 pigs were lent to families in the form of capital to start a small business. We built 18 chicken coops and 36 pig pens with rural families. 94 families benefitted from a micro loan with a 98.9 percent return rate

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the consolidated financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination.
