Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1

The Executive Committee is comprised of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Board. It also includes the Executive Director as an ad hoc member. The committee oversees the management of the organization, except for the power to amend the articles of incorporation and bylaws, has the powers and authority of the Board of Directors in the intervals between meetings of the Board, and is subject to the direction and control of the full Board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

Form 990 is prepared by an independent CPA firm and reviewed in detail by the organization's top management. The reviewed Form 990 is then provided to the Board of directors prior to filing with the IRS.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

The organization requires all officers and board members to annually complete and sign a conflict of interest statement. The President of the organization is responsible for reviewing the signed statements and ensuring that interested persons are in compliance with the conflict of interest policy. If a matter related to a potential conflict were to arise at a board meeting, the interested person would abstain from voting on matters related to the noted conflict, and the board would seek to replace the individual in an orderly manner if the conflict could not be cleared to the board's satisfaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

Line 15a) The independent Board of Directors reviewed and approved the Executive Director's salary and used 2012 comparability data. This process and decision is documented in the Board minutes. Line 15b) The independent Board of Directors reviewed and approved the President's salary and used comparability data. This process and decision is documented in the Board minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 18

The organization makes its Form 1023 and Form 990 available to the public upon request and also makes their Form 990 available to the public on their website.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy and audited financial statements available to the public upon request and also makes their conflict of interest policy and audited financial statements available to the public on their website.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C:

The organization's Board assumes responsibility for oversight of the audit of its financial statements and selection of its independent accountant. This process has not changed since the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the consolidated financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the consolidated statement of activities. As of December 31, 2015 and 2014, the Organization had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements. Amigos for Christ (AFC) files information tax returns in the U.S. and various state jurisdictions. AFC is generally no longer subject to U.S. federal and state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2012.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Amigos for Christ exists to serve God. We do this by two approaches. First, we facilitate sustainable, locally-empowered improvements in water, health, education, and economic infrastructure in rural Nicaraguan communities by developing leaders, integrating ourselves into the communities, and providing financial assistance to overcome otherwise impossibly high costs. Second, we host short term missionaries who want to step out in faith and lend a helping hand. Through the life changing experiences that result, both missionaries and impoverished families grow together in faith and richness of life.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Education & Nutrition: We aim for 100% graduation from elementary school for the children in our partner communities. To accomplish this, in 2015 we built a new school for a community whose previous school was entirely constructed of sticks and plastic sheets. We fed 534 students lunch throughout the year to incentivize parents to bring their kids to school. We provided afterschool arts and sports programs to motivate 762 students to attend class. And we provided 85 secondary/college students with scholarships that allow them to continue their studies.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Water & Sanitation: We work in 17 communities with the goal of eliminating kidney and parasitic diseases that stem from dehyradtion and poor sanitary standards. First, we help communities develop leadership to mobilize the communities and visualize the end goal. We then assist in the digging of wells and laying of pipe, so that every home in each community can have access to fresh water. The final steps include the removal of latrines--which have proven to be ineffective at reducing parasites-- and the installation of bathrooms with flushing toilets and showers. In 2015 we dug 3 new community wells, laid over 11,000 meters of pipe, removed 37 latrines, and installed 68 modern bathrooms.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Project Support: We maintain a compound in Nicaragua to house our missionaries, offices, warehouses, and fleet of vehicles--all of which are necessary for our daily operations.Missions Outreach: One of our core foundations is to Connect Cultures. We facilitate trips for Americans to assist Nicaraguans as they build their communal infrastructure. This gives Americans a chance to be good neighbors, show the love of Christ, and see how other cultures practice community. In turn, Nicaraguans benefit from a helping hand and financial assistance that allows them to dream bigger.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the consolidated financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination.
