“Form 990,part111,line 4a-program service accomplishmentprogram service-20172017 represented the best year in our history. We didnt hold any major fundraising event apart from our walkathon but were able to build momentum through monthly events and an online campaign in ramadan. We continued providing services in 11 countries, supporting close to 900 orphans. Our income grew, as did our donor and volunteer base. We maintained 3 employees: chief executive officer (full time), operation lead (part time) and web developer (part time). These three roles are critical in managing givelights growth, operations, multiple projects/events, book-keeping, and website management. 2017 accomplishments by country:1. Aceh home, indonesia a. Our kids continued to grow academically, emotionally, and spiritually. Many of them participated in competitions at school and on a community level. They also won many trophies from school and from the city, in diverse areas including math olympics, running, and speech competition. Samha, who won a full scholarship in 2016, participated in a national competition for quran memorization. Two thousand and four hundred participants from 400 universities and colleges joined the race and she won third place. We are so proud of her consistent accomplishments and surely she serves as a great role model for our younger kids. Sami khan, a phd candidate from mit, taught and volunteered at our aceh home for two weeks. He taught math, science, biodigestion, organic farming and hydrophobic, using nano-engineered materials he brought from mit. The children were really excited to be learning firsthand from a researcher from a world-class institution of higher education.every year we reinforce the philosophy that education is the key to a bright future. We emphasize that all can attendollege as long as they have the ambition and willingness to work hard. We are blessed that none of our children have had to stop education due to lack of funds. Most importantly, they all know that they have the resources they need to go far in life from examples set by our older children. 2. Pakistan/kashmirwe decided to stop sponsoring 160 orphans in pakistan and kashmir through partnership with helping hands relief and development (hhrd). They were not able to provide personalized reports of each child as we requested. This was key to maintaining relationships with donors as donors generally would like to know how their donations are spent. We were able to find another partner whose mission and philosophy are more aligned with our own. We plan to begin a new sponsorship in 2018 and to eventually support 200 children in pakistan 3. Bangladesha. Our founder, dian alyan travelled to bangladesh in the summer of 2017 and spent 4 days in our home in savar. What a joy for her to be able to spend every waking moment with 50 girls who were as eager to be with her as she was to be with them. They played together, did yoga, and studied geography and math.the monsoon rains were pouring as if bringing glad tidings and intensifying their happiness. When she left, the children wept and so did she. She wrote about the experience for our enewsletter, and continues to communicate with the girls via emails and skype. In this home, we also built a school because there were no good schools in the neighborhood. Our goal is to provide a high-quality education that will be accredited by the government. The greatest challenge has been to instill self-confidence and discipline as these girls came from very poor family backgrounds and it is not uncommon for girls to be married off at the young age of 13 in bangladesh. We would like to change this by giving them hope and the ability to dream of a bright future. When asked what they want to become, many answered doctor, teacher, lawyer, and even pilot.
