Form 990, part vi, section b, line 11b - form 990 review process: the form 990 is provided to each board member for review before filing. Any questions and/or comments are discussed between the board members and any questions are sent to the president of the organization for resolution. Once all question/issues are satisfactory resolved, and the board members give their consent, the form 990 is filed.

Form 990, part vi, section b, line 12c - explanation of monitoring and enforcement of conflicts: the organization regularly and consistently monitors and enforces compliance with the policy by requiring all directors and officers to sign a conflict of interest and disclosure form on a regular basis, and to affirmatively disclose potential conflicts as they arise.

Form 990, Page 6, Part VI, Line 15A

Form 990, part vi, section b, line 15a - executive compensation process: during fiscal year 2018-2019 the board of directors, at their meeting of november 2018, agreed to a review of executive compensation of the president. That review was conducted during 2019 and a new executive compensation proposal was ultimately concluded and approved by the independent members of the board of directors in december 2019. The methodology used by conflict dynamics includes a comparison based on data pertaining to compensation for comparable positions at similarly situated organizations, and an 'internal' comparison using compensation of other members of the organization. This process included but was not limited to review of: (i) third- party/independent survey of not-for-profit organization salaries for massachusetts and for the united states in general compiled by economic research institute; (ii) annual filings of comparable not-for-profit organizations of similar size, mission and geographical location using comparability date. (iii) united states government senior executive salary scales, 2018 and 2019; (iv) united nations professional and management salary scales, 2018 and 2019; (v) united states government bureau of labor statistics cost of living/cpi calculator. The data sources and citations for each sources are included in the compensation review document. The decisions of the independent members of the board of directors regarding executive compensation are captured through their signature of the executive compensation proposal.

Form 990, part vi, section b, line 15b - describe the compensation for other officers: other than the president of the organization, no officer(s) receive compensation.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Conflict dynamics international is an independent, not-for-profit organization founded to prevent and resolve violent conflict between and within states, and to alleviate human suffering resulting from conflicts and other crises.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Programs 01 and 03: conflict prevention and resolution (program classes p01 and p03): conflict dynamics' programs to prevent and resolve violent conflict are arranged in the organization's peace action program area. This program area encompasses programs and projects on thematic issues related to peace as well as context-specific programs. Conflict dynamics activities in this area included mediation, mediation support, conflict analysis, convening and facilitation, dialogue process design, technical support, capacity building etc. This work included development and support in use - by parties to conflict, civil society constituencies and affected communities - of frameworks and tools for conflict prevention and resolution. Conflict dynamics worked with inter-governmental organizations to support mediation efforts and conflict prevention, and contributed to national and international dialogues and policy discourse on conflict prevention and resolution. Furthermore, conflict dynamics supported national capacities and approaches to building peace, which included collaborations with national partner organizations. Conflict dynamics' work in this area has a particular focus on addressing exclusion and inequality as key drivers of conflict. Work in this program area directly benefited more than 58 million people affected by armed conflicts in specific contexts in africa. This work also substantially benefited thousands of peace practitioners working globally in many of the 52 state-based armed conflicts ongoing around the world in 2019. Relationship to organization's exempt purpose: work in these areas contributed directly and substantively to conflict dynamics' mission to prevent and resolve violent conflict.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4B

Program 02: humanitarian policy and practice (program class p02): conflict dynamics programs to alleviate human suffering are arranged in the organization's humanitarian action program area. This program area encompasses programs and projects on thematic issues related to humanitarian affairs as well as context-specific programs. In this program area, conflict dynamics developed and implemented approaches to improve the policy and practice of humanitarian assistance and protection, which contributed to alleviating human suffering in situations of armed conflict around the world. This work included humanitarian policy development and outreach in the areas of: (i) ensuring humanitarian access to- and by populations in need during armed conflicts; (ii) improving humanitarian engagement with parties to armed conflict; and (iii) protection of children in situations of armed conflict. Conflict dynamics' work in this program area is oriented to improving the lives and living conditions of a portion of the estimated 1.8 billion persons living in fragile contexts and, more specifically, of the 167 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and protection worldwide. The work on humanitarian access and engagement contributed to improvements in humanitarian action which benefited 26.6 million persons in contexts across the african continent and in the middle east. This included work in several of the 60 countries where people cannot access what they need. Conflict dynamics' work on children affected by armed conflict involved activities to strengthen accountability for serious violations against children in situations of armed conflict. This initiative aims to benefit, over time, the estimated 426 million children living in conflict-affected areas and to address the increase in the number of violations committed against children in 19 country situations. Conflict dynamics also commenced exploratory work on use of emerging digital technologies to help people help themselves and others in times of crisis. This included digital technologies to help protect children affected by conflict and digital technologies to improve access by people to the goods and services they need. Relationship to organization's exempt purpose: this work contributed directly and substantively to conflict dynamics' mission to alleviate human suffering arising from conflicts and others crises.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4C

Program 03: strengthening humanitarian capacity (program class p04): conflict dynamics programs to alleviate human suffering are arranged in the organization's humanitarian action program area. Conflict dynamics conducted activities to strengthen the capacity of national and international humanitarian organizations and conflict-affected communities to improve humanitarian assistance and protection. This included improving the capacity to engage in humanitarian negotiations for the purpose of achieving better humanitarian outcomes. This work consisted of consultations and outreach activities. During 2019 and early 2020 conflict dynamics worked closely with humanitarian partners on this initiative with a view to enhancing the protection of civilians, especially in times of conflict. Estimated beneficiaries: this work will benefit over time approximately 26 million persons in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in four situations of armed conflict in africa. In addition, humanitarian practitioners in several situations of armed conflict directly benefited from this work. Relationship to organization's exempt purpose: this work contributed directly and substantively to conflict dynamics' mission to alleviate human suffering arising from conflicts and other crises around the world.
