Highway Geology Symposium

“Established to foster a better understanding and closer cooperation between goelogists and civil engineers in the highway industry, the highway geology symposium (hgs) was organized and held its first meeting on marh 14, 1950 in richmond, virginia. Attending the inaugural neeting were representatives from the state highway departments (as referred to at the time) from georgia, south carolina, north carolina, virginia, kentucky, west virginia, maryland, and pennsylvania. In addition, a number of federal agencies and universities were represented. A total of nine technical papers were presented. Since the initial meeting, 69 consecutive annual meetings have been held in 35 different states until the pandemic prevented the 2020 and 2021 conferences. The in-person conference resumed in 2022. The 2023 conference was held in person once again in august 2023 in tacoma, washington.”

“The highway geology symposium held its annual 4-day conference and field trip in august 2023 in tacoma, wa. The conference is designed to build a closer cooperation between geologists, civil engineers, consultants and contractors in the highway industry through education, sharing lessons learned and providing an opportunity to meet subject matter experts from other states.”
