“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: SPF-SIG: SAFE has launched an effort to reduce alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes in 15-24 year olds in Chesterfield County. In 2009-2010, there were 242 of these preventable crashes in our community. The first phase of the SPF-SIG project is focused on needs assessment, capacity building and strategic planning. The needs assessment process includes the collection of data to determine who the drivers are in these crashes, when and where the crashes occur, and why the crashes occur. Contributing factors such as community access to alcohol through licensees and retail and restaurant availability are being considered, as well as the arrest and conviction rates in our locality. Youth and community perceptions and norms are being gathered and analyzed. Community partnerships will be formed and enhanced as a result of this data collection process and these partners will develop strategies for future implementation to change the drinking and driving climate in our community. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Caf Conversations and Parent Pods: SAFE Inc., exists because substance abuse is preventable. We partner with police, businesses, schools, families, and the faith community to create an environment that values healthy living. We have an underage drinking campaign which has two specific components: Caf Conversations and Parent Pods. Caf Conversations are evening events that initiate substance abuse conversations among parents and their pre-teen children. And Parent Pods are guided weekly small group discussions among parents on building and maintaining healthy dynamics within their families and neighborhoods. SAFE gathers school board members and faith community leaders together through monthly breakfasts to assist these valuable partners in fostering the substance abuse free living message. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Inhalant abuse prevention initiative: Few adults are aware of inhalant abuse - the deliberate concentration and breathing of chemical vapors from common products to get high. Younger adolescents, even fourth or fifth graders, abuse these products, risking their brains and their lives. SAFE's 2005 youth survey data showed the percentage of eighth-graders abusing inhalants was twice the national average. Through the development of a comprehensive inhalant abuse prevention campaign, SAFE reduced inhalant abuse by 64 percent by 2010, an accomplishment that was recognized by two national awards. However, 2012 data showed an uptick in inhalant abuse; SAFE is redoubling its efforts to drive use downward. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Air conditioner locking caps initiative: SAFE has formed a unique partnership with the HVAC business sector to address a particular form of inhalant abuse: huffing refrigerant from access valves on air conditioning units. Adolescents can easily unscrew the valve cap, collect the refrigerant gas in a bag or balloon, and huff it for a quick and intense high. Unfortunately, they can also die from sudden sniffing death - a particular risk of refrigerant huffing. SAFE contacted local HVAC businesses to invite their involvement in providing locking caps for A/C refrigerant valves, which can only be removed by an A/C technician. Participating companies provide and install locking caps free. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: Medication abuse prevention initiative: The abuse of medications is a national epidemic among both youths and adults. SAFE's youth survey data showed that the percentage of Chesterfield County youths abusing medications is significantly higher than national averages. SAFE has partnered with a broad cross section of community and professional sectors, forming workgroups that are developing and implementing local initiatives to address the problem. For example, SAFE, in partnership with the Chesterfield Police Department, has led the way in Virginia in holding regular medication take-back events, collecting over two tons of expired or unneeded medications for safe disposal.
