Mission

The virginia opera association, inc. Works to attract, educate, develop and engage a diverse base of audiences, volunteers and professionals through the promotion and production of quality performances in the commonwealth of virginia.

The mission of the virginia opera is to produce operatic performances of the highest professional standards and to educate and develop audiences of all ages. The organization also identifies and develops extraordinary young artists, maintains a strong financial condition, and develops and supports professional staff and dedicated volunteers.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The transactions of the endowment funds listed on schedule d, part v are summarized on a consolidated basis with the virginia opera association. During 2013, endowment funds were liquidated to pay debt service obligations and operating shortfalls.

PART X, LINE 2:

The association has each been recognized by the internal revenue service ("irs") as tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the association's tax exempt purpose is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. The association is subject to unrelated business taxable income. The association believe they have appropriate support for any tax positions taken and, as such, do not have uncertain tax positions that are material to the combined financial statements. Federal tax returns (form 990 and 990-t) for both the association and foundation for the period from june 30, 2012, 2013, 2014 and the year ended june 30, 2015 are subject to examination by the irs, generally three years after they were filed.
