Mission
ReadyKids promotes kids' well-being through counseling, family support, and early learning opportunities. For over 100 years, we have served Charlottesville and the five surrounding counties with programs and services that respond to the changing needs of kids and families. In FY25, we impacted 4,397 kids, parents, and caregivers through our seven programs, and 94.1% of participants met targeted outcomes.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Home Visiting: provided intensive in-home support services to help families provide loving, nurturing care and safe environments for their young children despite circumstances such as poverty, single-parenthood, unemployment, and unwanted pregnancy. Outside independent review concluded that CYFS's Home Visiting again surpassed all state benchmarks for outcomes related to maternal and infant health, and the ongoing healthy development and safety for children. For the past six years, high-risk families participating in CYFS Home Visiting services have received no new founded Child Protective Services reports for abuse or neglect. While the federal and state funding landscape for home visiting services experienced dramatic changes last year, the program was able to maintain service levels, reaching 90 parents and 101 children.
- Activity 3
- Runaway Emergency Services Program (RESP): entered the development phase of two new strategies to reach at-risk teens before they reach crisis. The Peer Support Groups initiative piloted well at Charlottesville High School, and is expected to be expanded this school year. Six-week session Peer Support Groups facilitated by a CYFS RESP Counselor were offered to at-risk kids self-identified or referred by counselors. Support Groups are designed to teach teens life skills that help them deal with common issues before reaching a point of crisis. Participants rated the program very highly. The Suspended Student program was an effort to provide constructive support including counseling and tutoring for high school students on out-of-school suspension. The program was tested at Monticello High School, but experienced problems with low student motivation/incentive, lack of space and lack of staff.

| IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription | 0 | Our mission is opening doors to bright futures for kids. During the past year alone, our programs reached over 3,700 children in low-income or at-risk families, working to meet their immediate needs and helping those around them to create healthy environments at home, in child care and school, and in the community. CYFS programs serve Charlottesville and five surrounding counties (Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson), and address the issues of poverty, abuse and neglect, parenting, child care quality, teen runaways, and early learning, including social and pre-literacy skills. The theme shared by all of our programs is that they are all about kids - about reaching children wherever they are - at home, in child care, in school, or on the streets - and giving them the chance to reach their full potential. |
| IRS990/ActivityOther/Description | 0 | 1. Victims of Child Abuse (VOCA): VOCA provides free professional counseling to children and adolescents who are victims of child abuse or neglect, as well as to non-abusing family members, to heal the trauma of the abuse and create safe and nurturing home environments. The program provided counseling services to 92 child victims and 70 family members. Our Victims of Child Abuse (VOCA) program was awarded two highly competitive state grants that have allowed us to hire two additional full-time counselors and several part-time counselors. This expansion allowed us to provide counseling services on-site in the outlying counties and greatly reduces our waiting list for services. 2. Early Learning programs: continued to reach low-income preschool age children with activities to develop literacy and decision-making skills. As part of a new community-wide effort to build knowledge and support for the social, emotional and behavioral health of children ages 0-6, STAR Kids provided Al's Caring Pals - A Social Skills Toolkit curriculum training to area home-based child care providers so that they can incorporate strategies into their care that support the social and emotional development of children. Additionally, twenty-seven trained Play Partners volunteers presented early literacy reading and extension activities in 11 child care locations. Volunteers gave over 1,400 hours of their time this year and distributed 900 new books to participating children and their caregivers to encourage reading activities in child care and low-income homes. A year-end event at the downtown amphitheater sponsored by BB&T provided a wonderful opportunity for children and teachers to celebrate these accomplishments. Downtown businesses participated in providing activities for the children demonstrating new community support for the home-grown program. 3. Family Connections: began offering parent education classes in CYFS's new Education Center. Having the new space greatly increases the program efficiency as materials are stored and utilized in one location, and staff do not have to use time and money to make arrangements to use off-site classrooms. Program accessibility has improved too, as clients can easily register and attend classes at one, convenient location. Also this year, the ParentingMobile extended neighborhood based outreach services to a new site in the Blue Ridge Commons community. Having established a trusted, reliable presence in the neighborhoods it serves, the ParentingMobile continues to build new partnerships to connect residents with additional supports. This year the project started working with Martha Jefferson Hospital, helping them to bring health education into these low-income communities to improve health outcomes for families and their children. |

| IRS990/Description | 0 | Child Care Quality: had great success implementing new strategies to reach more child care providers. Giving providers greater flexibility in terms of their commitment level, CCQ was able to recruit many more center and home-based participants in quality improvement services. Child care providers are able to receive mentoring for a shorter period of time, such as the mentor-for-a-month program, instead of having to sign up for ongoing long-term services. Ironically, allowing for a less formal relationship has increased provider participation on an ongoing basis. More than three times as many home-based providers participated in quality improvement than did the previous year. At the same time, training numbers doubled (580 trainings in 2010-2011 versus 225 the previous year) with use of the Education Center in the new CYFS building, both because the center allows each training to serve more people and because it allows a higher number of trainings to be offered. |

| IRS990/MissionDescription | 0 | Our Mission is opening doors to bright futures for kids. During the past year alone, our programs reached 3,700 children in low-income or at-risk families, working to meet their immediate needs and helping those around them to create healthy environments at home, in child care and school, and in the community. |
