Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The phillips collection is the oldest museum of modern and contemporary art in the u.s. In addition to presentation of works from the permanent collection and special exhibitions, the museum maintains active educational, academic, and public program series and numerous partnerships with other d.c. Arts organizations, embassies, and educational institutions. The phillips takes pride in its heritage as an intimate museum combined with an experiment station.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Development and presentation of a series of special exhibitions drawn from the museum's own holdings as well as from other institutions and private collectors. Fy13 highlights included: per kirkeby, an exhibition of this danish artist's paintings and sculptures, which also traveled to the bowdoin college museum of art; an exhibition which explored the artistic dialogue among pollock, ossorio, and dubuffet, which was developed in partnership with the parrish art museum; and an exhibition of braque's cubist still life works developed in collaboration with the mildred lane kemper art museum. Each of these major exhibitions was accompanied by a catalogue. The museum's contemporary intersections series included installations by jeanne silverthoren, bernard hildebrandt, and xavier veilhan, as well as an exhibiton of ellsworth kelly's panel paintings in honor of his 90th birthday. Extensive programming accompanied each exhibition. Digital assets associated with our exhibitions and related programs expanded significantly during fy13. The phillips collection won the dc mayor's award for excellence in an artistic discipline in fy13.
Activity 3
Management and maintenance of the museum's permanent collection of approximately 3,000 works originally created beginning in 1913 by duncan phillips and his wife marjorie phillips and opened to the public beginning in 1921 as the nation's first museum of modern art. Activities include conservation, acquisition of new works through both gift and purchase, digital reproduction for publications and for presentation on the museum's website and on artstor and google art, and research and interpretation for scholars and the public utilizing the museum's library and archives. The museum lends frequently to colleague institutions and develops exhibitions for presentation at other museums. During fy13, the museum's american holdings continued to travel in our exhibition titled "masterworks of american art in the phillips collection", which was exhibited at the amon carter museum and at the tampa art museum. The museum continued its academic collaboration with george washington university and created a new academic class on cultural diplomacy in collaboration with the georgetown university school of foreign service. The museum's popular "conversations with artists" series welcomed an international line-up of contemporary artists included pedro reyes, tehching hsieh, and wangechi mutu.
